As my kids have gotten older, I’ve realized that this traveling mom sometimes needs to take a break and slip away by myself, or with my husband for a romantic getaway. This is perfectly all right with my kids and it may surprise you, but sometimes my teenagers really want time away from me, too.
Over the past few years, my husband and I have made it a priority to carve out a bit of “us time” away from the kids. Our favorite romantic destination in Ohio is actually found a short drive from our home at Landoll’s Mohican Castle in Loudonville.
Tucked away on a hilltop setting, a short drive from the heart of Ohio’s Amish Country, this retreat has become a popular location for weddings since its construction in 2002. Just look at it, what princess wouldn’t want to get married in such a magical setting? But this location isn’t just for newlyweds, it’s a perfect couple getaway for anyone who wants to leave the busy world behind and relax in affordable, rustic sophistication.
Each of the eleven castle suites are tastefully decorated with Old World charm, featuring floors, beams and trim handcrafted from hardwoods milled from the estate. Some of the suites also have beautiful seasonal gas fireplaces with stone hearths created with hand selected stones collected from the early pioneers on the land.
My husband and I chose to reserve the Landoll Suite, a private, three tier suite with a spiral staircase that lead to a private overlook of the grounds from our own turret. We also had a private entrance with a patio overlooking the grounds, a great place to relax, sip a glass of wine (or Pepsi, as my husband prefers), and bask in the soft glow of the early evening, listening to the sounds of nature.
With a pull-out sleeper sofa, our suite with kitchenette, would accommodate four, appropriate for any parent not yet ready to leave home without their children. While my husband and I enjoyed a private, horse drawn carriage ride, the estate also offers an indoor pool, hot tub and game room in a separate building that the kids are sure to enjoy. You’ll also find a lookout tower, garden trails, hiking trails and family friendly restaurant on-site.
A small selection of snacks and beverages are sold in the lobby and a standard complimentary continental breakfast is provided.
Nearby Loudonville, offers a host of activities that appeal to both couples and families with several specialty shops, canoe liveries, Mohican State Park, zipline adventures and a celebration twice a year that pays homage to the area’s Native American heritage; the Great Mohican Pow-Wow.
