Savannah, Georgia, has both history and the beach. The small city boasts the largest National Historic Landmark District in the United States, and many hotels in the historic district cater to family travelers. The mansions around the city squares hint at the wealth once concentrated here, but you can easily find plenty of free family things to do in Savannah.

Hit the Streets in Savannah

Free Savannah Walking Tours offers daily 90 minute walking tours of the historic district. If you prefer a self-guided tour, head to the Savannah Visitor Center and grab a map of the area. You can walk around to see more than 20 city squares filled with monuments; plaques offer lengthy descriptions. The squares are surrounded by museums, churches and trees dripping with Spanish moss.

Tastings in Savannah

Along West Broughton Street, shops offer samples of olive oil, Georgia products, tea, spices and more. Don’t miss the Savannah Bee Company’s flagship store, with a honey tasting bar and kids only play space.

Forsyth Park

This urban park has a great playground, gorgeous fountain and weekly farmers market. Bring a ball so the kids can run around on the fields, or take a picnic. There is also a cafe with clean bathrooms.
