Helena, the “Queen City of the Rockies” is the capital of Montana. You can see 19th-century mansions, historic Last Chance Gulch businesses, and restored pioneer dwellings.

Nearby lakes and rivers offer fishing, swimming, camping, water-skiing and boating in summer, with ice sailing in winter.

Helena, in Southwest Montana, has these three free attractions:

Trolley to Trails

Take a free shuttle from Women’s Mural, on Broadway and Last Chance Gulch, up to the trailhead of the National Recreation Trail. You can bike or hike; the shuttle has bike racks. The shuttle runs on weekends, June to September.

Holter Museum of Art

The museum’s 17,000 square foot exhibition space shows all art media, contemporary and historical. Local artists started the museum in 1987. Browse the shop displays to purchase work of regional artists, craftsmen, and writers.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Looking to make the most of your summer budget while maximizing the fun? With a wide range of deals on local activities, dining, and experiences, Groupon helps you stretch your budget by offering discounted options near you.

Montana State Capitol

Discover the Capitol’s grand history, ornate art, classical architecture and function as the seat of Montana’s government.  Self-guided tour booklets are available at the first floor information desk anytime during Capitol hours. The historic 1902 building is an architectural gem.
