Because you always want some more, but your mouth is full of sticky marshmallow, so you can only ask for “s’more!”

We’re not going to call these recipes because do you really need a recipe to tell you how to make s’mores? I mean s’mores should be made with your heart. You need to feel the love as you roast that marshmallow over the firepit, choose your chocolate element and sandwich it between two graham cracker halves (or cookies) just before tasting that golden brown wonder.
In case you need a refresher, here is how to make these treats the traditional way:
A traditional s’more is composed of a roasted marshmallow, a thin square of chocolate, and two graham cracker squares. You put the marshmallow on a skewer, toast it over the bonfire, put the square of chocolate on one graham cracker half, slide the melty marshmallow onto the chocolate, top it with the second graham cracker half and squeeze.
Now that’s the traditional way.
But what if you took it to the next level with these s’more ideas?
Not a “Real” S’more but Delicious
A s’more sushi video has been circulating on Facebook. This rolled up Rice Krispie treat is only s’more adjacent. However, it was fully delicious and had us asking for s’more. It wasn’t even as messy to make as I thought it would be.
SheBuysTravel Tip: The recipe did not call for enough chocolate, in our opinion. Add more. You could change the flavor on this by subbing in flavored Fluff (marshmallow creme). I’m ready to try Strawberry Fluff next.
Best Marshmallows for S’mores
The best s’more ideas start with really great marshmallows. For s’mores involving smaller cookie bases or even pretzels, a small traditional marshmallow is best. For creative combinations, flavored marshmallows like Stuffed Puffs Chocolate on Chocolate Marshmallows (chocolate flavored AND filled with chocolate!) will up your game. Kraft now makes square Jet-Puffed S’MoreMallows that are perfectly sized for your graham cracker.
Need more variety? The sky is the limit. A company called SmashMallow sells a variety pack that includes Mint Chocolate Chip and Strawberries and Cream marshmallows. Feeling really motivated? It actually isn’t that hard to make marshmallows! Then the kids can cut out their own shapes. You just need unflavored gelatin. This is one of my favorite recipes.
Best Chocolate to Put in S’mores
The next part you can switch up is the chocolate. You can stick with milk chocolate or take it up a notch with dark chocolate or even caramel chocolate. Or you can get really crazy.
From M&M candy bars to Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups to Kit-Kats your options are wide open. Can’t choose just one? Buy a variety pack of candy bars and let everyone pick their favorite. And it doesn’t stop with candy bars! Spread peanut butter or Nutella. Miss flying? Did you know Biscoff has a cookie butter? You’ll feel like you’ve paid $30 to check a bag on Delta when you bite into a treat made with this spread.
The Sandwich Part: S’mores Ideas that Aren’t Just Graham Crackers.
Look, there is nothing wrong with a standard graham cracker s’more. There’s a reason why that’s the go-to. But why not explore more options? Chocolate graham crackers, striped ring cookies, Samoas and Thin Mints (Aldi has knock offs if you’ve already eaten all of yours), Oreos, Moon Pies — the possibilities are endless.
In fact, we tested more than 15 variations — and one of our favorites was made with marshmallow and chocolate sandwiched between 2 Doubletree Hotels chocolate chip cookies. Seriously, it was AMAZING.
SheBuysTravel Tip: Here’s the amazing Doubletree chocolate chip cookie recipe if you want to embrace this option. But, really, these cookies are so yummy that you should make them even if you don’t want to turn them into s’mores.
Our Favorite S’mores Easy Recipe Ideas
- Extra Chocolate S’More. Start traditional and swap in a chocolate marshmallow. Take it even further by making the graham cracker chocolate!
- Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup S’more. Move over milk chocolate. These s’mores use graham crackers with a roasted marshmallow and a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. (White chocolate peanut butter cups were very popular in our house.)
- Ring Cookie S’more. Two fudge striped ring cookies with a marshmallow smashed between them, no chocolate bar neeeded.
- Nutter Butter S’more. Gently split open a Nutter Butter to make a peanut buttery treat using a marshmallow and Hershey’s milk chocolate bar.
- Oreo S’more. Great with sandwich cookies. The variety of flavors available make this an endless s’more ideas option. Oreo even has a Marshmallow flavor out right now! Or try the Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie Oreo.
- Mint Oreo S’more. Swap the chocolate with an Andes Mint for a taste sensation. Use a chocolate marshmallow to tie the flavors together.
- M&M S’more. Sure M&M’s would be hard to get on a s’more but with M&M candy bars it’s easy. Use graham crackers or up your game with chocolate flavored graham crackers.
- Moon Pie S’more. This Southern favorite is essentially a year-round s’more. If you heat it up, it gets messy. Slam it between some graham crackers with a giant marshmallow for a decadent treat.
- Banana S’more. Add some sliced bananas onto a traditional s’more to make it “healthy.” Also, pairs great with a smear of peanut butter.
- Strawberry S’more. Chocolate and strawberries are such a classic combo. Celebrate this summer fruit on a s’more.
- Doubletree Cookie S’more. Mentioned above but worth another push. It’s delicious. Try it!
- Kit-Kat S’more. A favorite of many SheBuysTravels. Replace plain chocolate with a Kit-Kat for a crunchy treat.
- Pretzel S’more. Salty and sweet, a timeless classic. You can go two ways with this one. Add pretzels onto a traditional s’more or use pretzel squares as the sandwich part of the s’more. Pretzel Crisps work really well for this. Just the right amount of crunch!
Make it a Party!
We all need some more joyous occasions right now. Keep the kids busy with a s’mores party. We love the way that Britni over at Play Party Plan set up her s’mores bar and she’s got free printables to label your setup. Perfect for cookouts and BBQs all summer long.
Gear to Level Up
If you start exploring s’mores gear, your mind will be blown. There is so much stuff out there from caddies for the ingredients to on-table treat makers. (Remember pu pu platters from your youth? Looks like that.) Here are the items we love and personally use.
- Telescoping skewers. These skewers collapse, store conveniently in a bag, and can be used for everything from marshmallows to campfire hot dogs. We use them way more than we ever thought we would.
- 6 S’more Pan. Make 6 s’mores quickly and neatly with this locking grate pan. This one is perfect for grandparents who want to be “fun” but don’t want melted marshmallow all over their porch.
- S’mores Play Kit. The cutest little play kit with a fake campfire for the littles. Keep them busy and away from the fire with this.
- Camp Stove. We’ve got a tiny camp stove; one of the kids’ favorite activities to do with dad is to go out to the stables to roast marshmallows. With a little camp stove, we don’t have to build a fire each time.

How to Make Indoor S’mores
You may not always be able to head out to a fire when the craving strikes. Here are our instructions for making these treats in the oven year round.
Makes 6
6 graham crackers
6 marshmallows
1 bar of chocolate (Hershey’s)
a few teaspoons of Nutella
parchment paper
1. Heat oven to 375. Line baking sheet with parchment paper. Break graham crackers in half (set aside half) and put them on parchment paper. Take a marshmallow, put a little schmear of Nutella on it and stick it to the graham cracker. Repeat.
2. Bake for 4-7 minutes. Watch closely for the marshmallows to poof up. If you let them cook for too long, the graham cracker can burn.
3. Pull out of the oven and top each with 3 squares of chocolate. Eat immediately!
