If a ski trip is in your future, you don’t have to shell out big bucks for new ski wear. Renting ski clothes is a great way to go! Mountain Threads is a Colorado company that can outfit a family from head to toe in premium ski wear. It’s an easy way (and affordable) to stay warm and looking fabulous for your family ski vacation.

Rent, Don’t Buy Ski Clothes

Immediately after booking my family’s first ever ski vacation, I started mentally running through the list of things I would need to buy. Parkas, snow pants, ski goggles, neck gators, waterproof gloves… the list went on and on.

Since we live deep in the heart of Texas, I wasn’t even sure my kids all owned jeans that fit. Or socks without holes in them. Certainly they didn’t have any clothing that would actually keep them warm in a Colorado winter, up on a mountaintop. I started to get nervous that buying full ski wear for all five kids would break the bank. I wasn’t sure I would even be able to find essential wintwe gear like hand-warmers in Austin.

It was all a bit overwhelming. Then my brother, who skis regularly, recommended I look into renting ski gear from Mountain Threads.

How to Rent Performance Ski Wear

As annoying as it is when little brothers are right, Mountain Threads was a lifesaver. Here’s how to use the awesome company to make planning your next ski trip a piece of cake!

Select Your Gear

The Mountain Threads website makes it easy to rent online. You can select specific ski wear or choose a complete package deal at a discounted rate. I needed help figuring out what to order, so I called 303-993-2474. The owner, Julie, walked me through the entire process. She says many customers from Texas have no idea what ski wear they will need to keep warm on the slopes. I was grateful for her patient assistance. I ordered everything from ski goggles to snow boots. It was a huge weight off my shoulders to know that the only things I would need to buy for our trip was thermal underwear and boot socks.

Pick it Up or Have it Shipped

If you will be skiing in Colorado, you can stop by the Mountain Threads store west of Denver to try on your gear. But Mountain Threads ships nationwide so I chose the hassle-free option of having it shipped directly to our hotel.

Our delivery arrived a few days before we did. We had a nice box full of beautiful ski wear waiting for us when we checked in. It was such fun to open that box in our hotel room and dole out new ski clothes for every member of the family. We were all impressed with the quality and excited to hit the slopes in our awesome Columbia gear.

Wear it! Love it!

We were thrilled to discover that every article of ski clothing fit perfectly. It all looked brand new and was extremely comfortable (especially the Sorels boots – I wanted to keep them forever.) All of the jackets and pants were waterproof and insulated. We were all warm and dry the entire two days we spent skiing. There was not a single whine from a little person about being cold. It was a Christmas miracle.

Throw Everything Back in the Box and Ship it Right From the Hotel

Included in our box was a return shipping label and packing tape. All we had to do was account for all the ski wear, put it back in the box, seal it with the provided tape, affix the label, and drop it off at the hotel’s front desk for mailing. It was a surprisingly painless process. Easier than actually learning how to ski.

Why Renting from Mountain Threads is the Way to Go

If I had gone with my original plan of buying winter odds and ends from Goodwill before our ski vacation, here’s what I believe would have happened:

  • We would have looked dorky and mismatched with too-short or over-long snow pants.
  • I would have spent too much money and been grouchy knowing that none of the gear would fit the kids for very long.
  • We would have been cold and miserable because I wouldn’t have sprung for waterproof gloves and neck gators and ski goggles.

Instead, we were comfortable, happy, and all the kids loved skiing so much that they can’t wait to try it again. Family vacation win!

If you don’t want to take my word for it, just check out the Facebook and Yelp reviews for Mountain Threads – they get five stars across the board. User after user praises the small company for its high quality rental gear, friendly customer service, and ease of use. I told everyone we met in Colorado about our experience, and while they were baffled by the need for renting winter coats, they were impressed by the top-of-the-line ski wear we were sporting!
