Cooler Temps

If you have ever traveled to or live in Texas, you know that the Texas heat can be unbearable.  Even in the evening it is still HOT!  It was 8:45pm on the night we left on our most recent trip and it was still 104 degrees, can you say we are in the dog days of Summer?!?!?!  I am going to let that sink in 104 degrees at 8 at night.  In our latest road-trip we didn’t end up leaving Austin until about 9 pm and the sun had just set.  It was still warm out but it was bearable and an easy drive.

Less Traffic

As you know if you do not travel during peak times there will be less traffic.  We really enjoy this because it allows us to arrive to our destination quicker. Also, you don’t have to deal with traffic and the stress involved with crazy drivers on the road.  At night the thing you need to watch out for are animals.  On our long flat stretches of highway in Texas, you might encounter feral hogs and deer.

Kids Sleep

I love my boys to death but when they are strapped into a car-seat right next to each other for an extended period of time they get on each others nerves.  My children are in bed by about 8 pm and fully asleep by about 9 pm.  What we like to do when we travel is leave during that sweet spot right before they become extremely irritable and right before bedtime.  This helps because if they are sleep we do not have stop for food or to use the bathroom or because their right nostril is itchy.  After they are done watching a show or playing on their tablet they usually just drop them and fall right to sleep in their car seat.  For us, it allows us to drive in peace and not have to worry about who is touching who.

What time of day do you like to get out on the open road?
