Surrounded by powerfully lit up giant screens and craned-neck tourists, an exciting sojourn to Times Square in New York City will, sooner or later, leave you wanting to escape to a calm, quiet spot even just for a few minutes. Fortunately, the serenity of the Merrion Row Hotel awaits, just one block away. Tucked in off of 45th street, and remarkably quiet given its location, the Merrion Row is just one block from the epicenter of hustle and bustle.

An Oasis of Calm Amidst the Hustle and Bustle

As a lover of New York, it can seem sacrilegious to harp too much on the human need for quiet, but the truth is, and as every New Yorker knows, feeling safe and calm is a necessity in the Big Apple. Perhaps because it is set in off the street (a long corridor leads you back into the hotel itself), the Merrion Row is a true oasis of calm amidst all the chaos and excitement. And, best of all, it doesn’t break the bank.

Budget-Friendly and Beautiful

Most hotel reviews are geared either toward the budget-conscious or taste-conscious, as if never the twain should meet. But the Merrion Row satisfies those for whom aesthetics and reasonable prices are both important. It has character but modestly keeps itself in the $200-something-a-night bracket. Bronze-cast fixtures and black and white tile flooring evince a true old New York charm. For those with a penchant for toiletries, you’ll be pleased to know they are high quality and you’ll want to use them!

Old Time Charm Meets Modern Amenities

Simple yet elegant, the Merrion Row Hotel epitomizes old New York charm with essential amenities. These include:

  • Comfortable beds and new mattresses
  • Delicious food in the Merrion Row Restaurant and 2 meal vouchers per stay.
  • Strong wifi throughout
  • 3 lounge areas for working, reading, or socializing

Like most NYC hotels, there is no parking but who wants to drive into Times Square when ample train and bus lines are right at your doorstep? There is strong wifi throughout the hotel, and three large common areas in which to do work: the cafe atrium, the bar area, and a lounge area at the front of the hotel.

The beds are very comfortable and every lodger gets a free meal voucher with a night’s stay. The restaurant has one of the best veggie burgers I’ve ever had, and the servers are warm and welcoming. The café even boasts a large atrium with a transparent ceiling, through which abundant sunshine pours. But the relative darkness of the rest of the hotel doesn’t make it dim but rather restful. People seem to take the tip and are quiet while walking through the halls–something sleepy visitors will likely be grateful for. Pro tip: if you’re in the mood for delicious Irish bar food, Connolly’s next door has some of the best fish and chips I’ve ever had in my life. (Another pro-tip: the manager suggested checking Expedia for the best hotel prices.)

Next time you’re in NYC, check out the Merrion Row Hotel. Your bank account and body will be grateful you did with all the peace and quiet it affords. Best of all, you’ll have all those extra dollars you didn’t waste on an overpriced hotel to spend on fun souvenirs in the gallery of lights!
