Spend the Day in Ohio’s Amish Country

When you think of Amish Country, you may think of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. But do you know that Ohio has the largest Amish community in the world?

I recently had the opportunity to explore some of my favorite Amish country attractions with my parents’ and teenage daughter for a relaxing multi-generational getaway.

Our day began in Millersburg and while I love visiting the many antique stores downtown, this particular day we were looking for a real bargain so we stopped at the Save & Serve Thrift store.

After shopping we continued to one of my mom and dad favorite discoveries, Miller’s Bakery, which they found during one of their many drives through the Millersburg countryside. It’s now become the perfect place to stop to grab a road trip snack or two. I can’t step inside the small Amish owned and operated store without buying a half dozen of the best Buttermilk Cookies that I’ve ever tasted.

Hershberger Farm & Bakery is another fun stop where you can take a ride in a buggy and watch goats climb on the roof of the barn- something you don’t see every day. The bakery offers a large selection of pastries, fry pies, breads and jams. If you step inside the door and venture to the far left hand corner of the store, you may score some savings on a selection of marked down day-old goodies.

You’ll find a lot of shopping in Berlin and one of our favorite stops is Sol’s Palace. Set up with hundreds of individual booths, you’ll find hand crafted items as well as housewares, home décor items and discounted merchandise.

Heini’s Cheese Chalet offers free cheese making tours, a large selection of cheese, meats, bulk foods and lots of complimentary samples for visitors. Heini’s offers plenty of free parking and if you haven’t had your fill of Amish baked goods, you can walk or drive across the street to Kauffmann’s Country Bakery.

My dad doesn’t visit Ohio’s Amish Country without a stop at Winesburg Meats to stock up on their beef sticks. This meat shop offers a selection of specialty smoked and fresh cut meats.

Another Amish Country favorite that we have enjoyed in the past is Lehman’s Hardware Store, which believe it or not is certainly not just for men. This popular store is definitely a destination in itself so allow yourself plenty of time to explore.

When in Ohio’s Amish Country, you’re bound to work up an appetite with many restaurant options to choose from. This particular day we ate in Holmesville at the Route 83 Restaurant. A small, local establishment, this restaurant provided generous food portions at a decent price and is one that we’ll definitely stop at on another visit to the area.

There’s so much to do that you could easily visit Amish Country for several days and not see everything.
