For my daughter’s eighth-grade graduation, we hopped a plane to New York City for a mother-daughter getaway. Looking to combine luxury with the lively SoHo atmosphere that teens crave, we booked a room at The Dominick. With an itinerary packed with museums, National Park Service sites, shopping and dining, we enjoyed several days exploring as she learned urban travel skills.

What I loved at The Dominick

  • The unobstructed views of downtown Manhattan and the Hudson River.
  • Understated elegance that appeals to adults without alienating kids.
  • A downtown location steps away from top restaurants and shopping.
  • Larger room packed with modern conveniences.

What I needed at The Dominick

  • A door between the bathroom and the bedroom.

Downtown NYC Luxury Hotel

Built in 2010, The Dominick is a downtown NYC luxury hotel, both with its design aesthetic and technology. With a sense of space that most New York City hotels lack, this property is a beacon of luxury on the downtown horizon.

In a neighborhood defined by narrow streets and vintage, boutique properties, The Dominick offers a luxurious NYC base. With all the amenities that define the AAA five-diamond distinction, The Dominick has 141 suites across 46 floors. The stand-out feature is the quiet, calming environment. Also outstanding; The attentive and friendly Dominick staff that offers assistance with luggage, dining reservations and directions to SoHo’s top spots.

Within walking distance of luxury shopping, galleries and iconic restaurants, The Dominick appeals to business travelers, families and international guests. It’s one of the few downtown NYC luxury hotels. Unliked midtown luxury properties that tend to appeal to an older clientele, The Dominick was just right for my 14-year-old daughter and me.

As a good neighbor, The Dominick features a tree-lined urban plaza on its property, offering a place for residents to read the paper while sipping coffee. Neighbors can also make appointments at the spa and use the pool.

My Family Suite at The Dominick

As I opened the door to my 24th floor family suite, I dropped my bag when I saw the view of the Hudson River. With an audible Wow, I walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows to savor it. As a former NYC resident, an unobstructed view of the river can’t be beat.

The warm, welcoming hues of home enveloped me in a sanctuary of calm among the ecstatic energy of New York. With furnishings provided by Fendi Casa, the textures of my suite appealed to my senses. I let my fingers dance across the supple leather headboard and the natural hide bench. Equally satisfying, the feel of the Italian cotton bedding and the wool carpets under my feet.

The Living Area at The Dominick

A short entryway leads to a large, multi-use space that serves as the living area. A long entertainment console and a large wall-mounted flat-screen TV make the space great for business travelers as well as teen visitors.

In front of the floor-to-ceiling windows, a sleeper-sofa offered a comfortable spot for my 14-year-old daughter to sleep. Outfitted with a cocktail table and chair, we used the living space for enjoying in-room coffee and evening cocktails while watching the lights shimmer off the Hudson River.

Opposite the windows, my suite featured a wet bar equipped with a copper sink and mini-refrigerator stocked with chilled liquor, wine and beer. On top of the counter, I found more snacks, along with additional beverages. My favorite feature, the Nespresso coffee maker with a selection of coffee and tea. Paired with porcelain cups and saucers, I enjoyed a cup of coffee each morning while gazing out the window.

Tucked into the cabinet, I found a full-size microwave, perfect to reheat take-out. With ample storage in the wet bar, I stowed my empty hanging bag in one of the larger drawers.

Next to the wet bar, I found a reach-in closet with a hanging rod. The family suites at The Dominick feature a half-bath, right off the living area– something I always appreciate when traveling with my family.

My Bedroom at The Dominick

NYC luxury for families with a king-sized bed.

A sliding door separates the living area of my suite from the private space of the bedroom. Whether hosting a client meeting or keeping the kids contained, I enjoyed the luxury of a separate bedroom.

With overhead music to calm the hum of the city below, my bedroom at The Dominick offered a sanctuary of refinement. More than a place to catch a night’s sleep, it lured me to linger in the morning when the city beckoned me to explore.

The tufted leather headboard in a shade of burnt umber dominated the bedroom landscape. A perfect juxtaposition to the pristine, Italian-made linens from Bellino. After a day of exploring New York’s museums, my weary body sunk into a bed that lulled me asleep in minutes.

Opposite the bed are a flat-screen TV and ample drawers for clothing. The floor-to-ceiling windows provided breathtaking sunset views of the Hudson River. Next to the console, a chair and floor lamp provided a spot to read.

The bedside tables feature charging stations, a bedside stereo and remote for the in-suite environment controls. With the touch of a button, we changed lighting, temperature, music, communications, TV and the shades throughout the suite.

My suite lacked a walk-in closet, though the reach-in closet provided two drawers, an in-room safe and hanging space for dresses. There was even a full-size umbrella we could have used in the event of rain. Along with the drawers in the console, I found ample space for my clothing though I had to unpack to keep my room tidy.

My Bathroom at The Dominick

Luxurious bathrooms are my nirvana. I love nothing more than a designer’s thoughtful details that transport a daily routine into a moment of luxurious respite. That is what I found in the bathroom at The Dominick, a downtown NYC luxury hotel.

The soaking tub anchors a room covered with striking Turkish Marmara marble. With a view of the Hudson River, I dimmed the lights, drew a bath and savored the bubbles as the city lights sparkled outside my window. Like the rest of the suite, the bathroom features motorized shades that allow for privacy or views.

For guests who prefer a shower, luxury awaits with a large, Marmara marble-tiled, glass-enclosed shower with an overhead rain fixture. The separate water closet features a frosted glass door to extend the openness of the space.

On the bathroom vanity, I found a full line of C.O. Bigelow bathing products along with cotton swabs and swipes. The vanity features drawers so I could stow my products among cotton towels and a pair of signature robes.

For guests who use their time in the bath to catch up on the daily happenings, the bathroom features a small TV with a remote. The make-up mirror and decorative lights beside the bathroom’s mirror provided light for dressing.

Dining at The Dominick

The Dominick offers several options for dining:

  • In-room dining
  • Cafe Mezz for breakfast and light meals, like sandwiches and salads, coffeehouse drinks, wine and cocktail
  • Mezzanine for a limited menu of appetizers and entrees paired with an ample offering of signature cocktails, wine and spirits

But we were in Soho, so we had to venture out. I made reservations for Sunday brunch at Balthalzar  at 80 Spring St. The French brasserie offers classics for breakfast, like Eggs Benedict and Brioche French Toast.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Reservations recommended for weekend brunch.

For a quick breakfast bite, try Dominique Ansel Bakery (189 Spring St.) for coffee and croissants. Another choice for French pastries and breakfast, Ladurée (398 Broadway) offers delightful macarons and a full menu.

The Dominick Spa and Outdoor Pool

With an 11,000 square-foot spa that spans two stories, The Dominick is the first Babor Signature Spa in North America. So find  unique offerings like the signature Turkish bathing ritual, the Hammam, where spa guests enjoy an invigorating spa treatment.

During my visit, I found nine treatment rooms at the spa with access to the outdoor lounging area with a lap pool and beverage service. With a wet and dry sauna rooms, the spa features an extensive list of services for women and men.

For guests who work out on a trip, The Dominick features Technogym equipment. A personal trainer can be arranged along with athletic wear for guests not bringing their own. In-room yoga kits are available along with a map of nearby jogging paths.

The Dominick features an outdoor, rooftop pool, for guests to enjoy seasonally (May through September). From the outdoor lounge chairs or cabanas, guests can order poolside cocktails and made-to-order sushi from the Terrace on 7.

Getting to The Dominick

Located at 246 Spring St., The Dominick is about an hour from New York’s Kennedy Airport. I used a cab to get to-and-from the hotel. The bellman can arrange any transportation needs.

For guests comfortable with the NYC Metro System, The Dominick is about a block from the Spring Street Station with A, C, and E subway trains. The Houston Street Station for the 1, 2, and 5 subway trains is about three blocks away. I used the subway to get around Manhattan during my stay.

Since parking in NYC is expensive and hard-to-find, I recommend not driving. Though valet parking is available at The Dominick.

Find a Downtown New York City luxury hotel that welcomes families with an especially-designed suite. Steps from fabulous shopping and iconic restaurants, The Dominick offers expansive views and luxurious bathrooms along with a seasonal pool along with a two-story spa. #TMOM #NewYorkCity #NYC Where to stay in New York City | Hotel Review | Luxury hotels in SoHo | The Dominick
