I’ve traveled all over Mexico, and one of the things that keeps bringing me back is how much there is to experience beyond the beach. Don’t get me wrong. I love a lounge chair, a gorgeous pool and a beautiful stretch of sand. But some of my favorite trips are the ones where I come home understanding a destination a little better.

Dia de los Muertos is one of those opportunities. Celebrated primarily on November 1 and 2, Dia de los Muertos honors loved ones who have died. You’ll see marigolds, candles, colorful ofrendas, Catrinas, music and plenty of food, but beneath all that color is something much more meaningful: remembering and celebrating the people we love. And for couples, I think there’s something especially beautiful about experiencing that together.

You can still have the romantic beach getaway you came to Mexico for. You’re just adding an experience you’ll probably talk about long after the tan lines disappear. Here are three resorts I’ve personally stayed at that I’d consider for a Dia de los Muertos couples getaway.

My husband and I loved walking to breakfast while spotting monkeys, swimming in limestone sinkholes and watching Maya-inspired evening performances. On November 1 and 2, Sandos Caracol Nature Resort & Water Park’s cultural setting becomes an even bigger part of the experience. Programming can include elaborate Dia de los Muertos altars, traditional mariachi music, skull face painting, Mexican food, Kermes-style carnival games, Mayan rituals led by local elders, evening cultural performances and Catrina parades throughout the resort.

The Mayan rituals are what would especially interest me. It’s one thing to see beautiful Dia de los Muertos decorations in a hotel lobby. It’s another to experience traditions in a place where Mayan culture and the natural landscape are already such an important part of the resort.

If you told me you wanted a romantic beach vacation but also wanted to get out and really experience Dia de los Muertos, I’d probably point you toward Puerto Vallarta. I’ve stayed at the Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa, and the location gives you the best of both worlds. You’re directly on Banderas Bay with the Sierra Madre Mountains in the distance, but downtown Puerto Vallarta and the Malecon are close enough for an easy date night. During Dia de los Muertos, that’s exactly where I’d go

• What We Loved Best: Combining private resort relaxation with easy date nights along downtown’s festive Malecon.

I like this option for couples who want to experience the holiday but might feel a little intimidated jumping straight into a major public celebration. Start at the resort. Learn a little. Then head downtown when you’re ready for more.

W Punta de Mita: Best for a Romantic Luxury Getaway

If you’re using Dia de los Muertos as an excuse for a romantic splurge, W Punta de Mita would be my pick. I’ve stayed here, and this resort feels special from the minute you arrive. It’s bold, colorful and luxurious without feeling stuffy, with the Pacific Ocean on one side and lush Riviera Nayarit surrounding you.

For my husband’s birthday one year, we booked a beachfront room with our own private pool, and it was absolutely worth it. If you’re celebrating an anniversary, birthday or just want to turn Dia de los Muertos into a romantic getaway, this is the place I’d consider upgrading. There’s something pretty wonderful about stepping straight out of your room to your own pool with the beach right in front of you. It made an already special birthday trip feel even more memorable.

• Tranquil Spa: Unwinding in hydrotherapy plunge pools beneath the roots of a giant fig tree.

Dia de los Muertos Gets More Intimate Here

W Punta de Mita draws heavily from the art and traditions of the Huichol, or Wixarika, people indigenous to this region of Mexico. You see those influences throughout the property, including the Camino Huichol, the resort’s spectacular mosaic walkway made from thousands of individual tiles.

During Dia de los Muertos, the resort takes a more intimate approach to the holiday than the bigger celebrations you’ll find elsewhere. Couples can experience programming that includes a shaman-led cacao ceremony on the beach, a special Day of the Dead dinner, ancestral flavors and regional cuisine, wellness rituals, guided cultural experiences and intimate dinners. Even the resort’s design ties into themes of remembrance. The Living Room Bar has an enormous chandelier inspired by an altar and filled with glowing candle-like lights.

For a couples getaway, I love that the celebration feels less like a big event you attend and more like something woven into your stay.

My Best Advice: Go Beyond the Beach

Here’s what I’d tell a friend planning this trip: don’t treat Dia de los Muertos like themed entertainment your hotel happens to be putting on. Enjoy the resort celebrations, absolutely. But learn about what you’re seeing. Ask questions. Participate in the cultural experiences and, when it makes sense, venture beyond the resort.

That’s especially true in Puerto Vallarta, where the city itself becomes part of the experience. I’ve spent a lot of time traveling around Mexico, and those are often the moments I remember most. I love the beaches, but connecting with the culture is what turns a vacation into a trip I keep talking about long after I get home. And isn’t that exactly what you want from a great couples getaway?
