I was able to spend some time at beautiful Dreams Estrella del Mar in Mazatlán, Mexico during the fall season. Part of Hyatt’s Inclusive Collection, I found this resort to be a fantastic option for families looking for an escape – with plenty of space to relax, reconnect and enjoy your “together time”. It’s truly a place to let go and unwind, while also offering an affordable and less-crowded place to get a true taste of the region.

Highlights

  • Spacious All-Suite Layouts: Oceanfront views, in-suite living areas & outdoor spaces built for together time
  • Uncrowded Private Setting: Located in a quiet gated community away from busier, louder, more expensive hotel areas
  • On-Site Waterpark Fun: Enjoy a splash zone, spiral slide, sprayers, buckets and a winding lazy river
  • Reservation-Free Dining: Eight restaurants offering varied cuisines from breakfast through dinner, as well as coffee and treats
  • Nearby Off-Resort Activities: Sinaloa’s largest turtle conservation center is steps away, Mazatlan town (and other activities) are reachable with a short car ride.

Property: Dreams Estrella del Mar Mazatlán Golf & Spa Resort | Address: Carretera Barrón – Isla Piedra Km 10 S/N, Mazatlán, Sinaloa 82267, Mexico | Phone: +52 669-689-0900 | 2026 Rates: From roughly $408 per night depending on day of week and season

Every suite at Dreams Estrella del Mar is oceanfront. Ground floor rooms (358 suites) open out to a swim-out pool. Higher floors have a bathtub on your balcony, beautiful ocean views and extra space for the whole family. I loved that every suite comes with a furnished balcony or terrace, round-the-clock room service and concierge, free Wi-Fi and a complimentary minibar that’s restocked each day. Since it’s an all-suite resort, no one is cramped into spaces just meant to sleep in, and you can enjoy common living areas – it looked like the perfect place for creating great memories.

  • Top Props: Spacious all-suite layouts give every family room to spread out, with living areas built for time together.
  • What Made It Special For Me: I was able to stay in the Preferred Club, which has its buildings anchored on either end of the property. I was also on a higher floor so my views were extra special, especially at sunset.
  • You’ll Want To Try This: Book a swim-out suite to step from your private terrace straight into the pool.
  • Preferred Room Extras: The Deluxe Suite Ocean View measures 549 square feet and can be set up with a king bed or two doubles. It has a furnished balcony and a bathroom with double sinks and a separate shower, and it fits up to four guests (no more than three adults).

SheBuysTravel Tip: Occupancy varies by suite category, so if you have a larger family, confirm the space you need before booking. Some Preferred Club Premium Ocean Front suites (roughly 620 square feet) cap your occupancy at two or three guests, while junior suites and the Deluxe Suite Ocean View sleep four.

What’s The Resort Like and What Is There To Do

Dreams Estrella del Mar Mazatlan Golf & Spa Resort is a rising, relatively new resort (2024), so its property is fresh and not overrun with people. The resort lies in a gated, private community rather than a louder, busier hotel strip, which can be a real treat for families looking to avoid crowds, waiting in line and noise.

There’s something for every member of the family to take part in: kids and teens can stay busy with a dedicated kids’ club and teen programs should they want to participate, while parents can unwind at the spa or work out in the state-of-the-art fitness center. Active families will appreciate the tennis and pickleball courts and the professional soccer fields, and golfers can enjoy an 18-hole course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. Couples are also able to get married here (or renew their vows) in the pretty on-site chapel.

  • Top Props : A quiet, gated community setting makes this resort feel like a true escape rather than the hustle of a place located on a busy resort strip.
  • What Made It Special For Me : Having plenty of time and space to grab a lounge chair by the pool whenever I wanted, without getting up at 6 am to secure a spot.
  • You’ll Want To Try This : Turn a morning into a family showdown with beach volleyball, ping-pong or a pickleball match, then cool off together at the pool.
  • Activity Highlights : Enjoy tennis, pickleball, beach volleyball, yoga, water aerobics, non-motorized water sports or a round on the Robert Trent Jones Jr. course. Teens and kids can join the Explorer’s Club (ages 3-12) or Core Zone Teens Club (ages 13-17) for their own kind of fun.

SheBuysTravel Tip: The Explorer’s Club only accepts children who are fully potty-trained, so families with toddlers who are not potty trained might want to ask the resort about alternate child care options.

The Water – What Are The Pools and Beach Like

I loved the choice of seating options – sun or shade, swim-up areas or quiet cabanas. Photo credit: Sharon Nolan

Not only are there multiple family pools to enjoy here, but there’s also the bonus of an on-site waterpark area – perfect for youngsters to enjoy hours of water play. A tall, spiral waterslide, sprayers, buckets, fountains and a winding lazy river let little ones splash and play. Parents and grandparents can find peace poolside (for additional privacy, an adults-only pool is available through The Preferred Club).

Beyond the pools, the resort has direct access to plenty of pretty Pacific beachfront, and the sound of ocean waves as you soak in the pool or walk in the sun will convince you (as it did me) that you’ve truly gotten away.

  • Top Props : Direct access to Pacific beachfront with a lively family pool scene just steps away.
  • What Made It Special For Me : The peaceful sound of ocean waves while soaking in the pool or walking in the sun made it feel like a true getaway.
  • You’ll Want To Try This : Float down the lazy river, then let the kids loose at the waterpark.
  • Custom Relaxation Detail : Slip away to the adults-only pool, available through The Preferred Club, for a quieter break.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Pacific surf and wind conditions can vary by the ocean, so plan on spending time at the pools, waterpark and lazy river for the most reliable conditions.

The Food – It’s All-Included But What Is It Like

So many restaurant choices allowed me to eat something different every night. Photo credit: Sharon Nolan

I have found that the food at an all-inclusive resort can often be subpar. Dreams Estrella del Martakes the time to ensure that their food isn’t what you are disappointed with when you’re here. There are multiple restaurants that are part of the all-inclusive plan – eight to be exact. They include a buffet, a grill, a café, an ice cream parlor and four à la carte restaurants serving Asian-Mediterranean, Italian, Mexican and seafood. None require reservations. That’s plenty of options even for families with picky eaters and all kinds of appetites. Twenty-four-hour in-room dining and a stocked minibar help make up the rest.

  • Top Props : A reservation-free dining policy makes meal planning stress-free, even with a hungry group.
  • What Made It Special For Me : I liked the variety of cuisine choices, and the staff was terrific at asking about and helping me navigate a tree nut allergy.
  • You’ll Want To Try : Visit the à la carte Mexican or seafood restaurant (to complement the Mexican theme of your vacation) for local flavors without leaving the resort.
  • Culinary Highlight : Should you want to add to your experience in Mazatlan, you can venture beyond the resort to enjoy the authentic local culinary scene, including fresh seafood and street food. The concierge can assist with this.

SheBuysTravel Tip: À la carte dinners don’t require reservations, but an easily accommodated dress code is in effect, so pack at least a few polished outfits. If you want to stay in (and enjoy dining in your PJs), the resort offers 24-hour room service.

What’s The Preferred Club and Should I Upgrade

If you want extra space and privacy within the same resort, the option to upgrade to the Preferred Club tier might just get you the stay you’re looking for with the extras you long for. Preferred Club guests stay in upgraded suites in prime spots on the property, with a personalized check-in area, a pillow menu and concierge help, plus private lounge access for breakfast and afternoon hors d’oeuvres.

  • Top Props : Upgraded suites in premium locations, with a private lounge and personalized service.
  • What Made It Special For Me : I loved having roomier accommodations, as well as heading off to the hydrotherapy circuit to wind down and treat myself.
  • You’ll Want To Try This: Stop by the Preferred lounge to take advantage of breakfast offerings and afternoon hors d’oeuvres, plus enjoy 30% off spa treatments and a complimentary hydrotherapy circuit visit once per stay.
  • Custom Club Detail : Golfers who book a Preferred Club Junior Suite Swim Out or higher for at least four nights get one green fee per person covered during their stay.

SheBuysTravel Tip: The hydrotherapy circuit visit is complimentary once per stay, and the golf perk requires a four-night minimum, so read the fine print before booking.

What’s Nearby In Case You Want To Venture Out

Visit The Nearby Turtle Sanctuary

For me, the most rewarding and memorable off-site highlight was the shortest trip. Just steps from the resort (so no need for a transfer or long commute) sits Sinaloa’s largest turtle sanctuary. It’s been in operation since 1998. Together with a member of the resort’s activity staff, other guests and I walked the short distance to the sanctuary, met the staff and watched a short educational film about the turtles and the sanctuary’s work. A team member then used turtle shells and posters to show us the size differences between species and what the turtles look like biologically.

She then introduced us to one of the newborn baby turtles while explaining how to release the hatchlings the right way. We then walked to the beach at sunset and released hundreds of adorable baby turtles onto the sand, cheering them on and watching in amazement as they instinctively crawled toward the water. It was scenic, it was moving and it was an incredible thing to witness.

  • Top Props: The sanctuary is right next to the resort, making a visit super convenient. The activity staff accompanied guests over, and the sanctuary team made the visit both educational and hands-on.
  • What Made It Special For Me: Having the opportunity to learn about as well as see and help release the newborn baby turtles was an incredible experience to be a part of.
  • You’ll Want To Try This: If you’re visiting from June through November (during nesting season) releasing turtles might be an option. Be sure to check with resort staff just to be sure.
  • Excursion Highlight: Being confident in our ability to safely release the turtles, and then being their biggest cheerleaders, was incredibly empowering.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Pay attention to the staff’s explanation of the right way to release the baby turtles – and don’t forget to bring your camera!

Head Into Town

Mazatlán is a real, lived-in community with local markets and a historic center, unlike more touristy regions like Cancún or Cabo, and with the lower price point to go with it. You’re close to Old Mazatlán and its cultural hub, Plazuela Machado, as well as an aquarium and the El Faro lighthouse (one of the tallest working lighthouses on Mexico’s Pacific coast, offering sweeping views of the city and coastline). These are all easy family day trips that the concierge can help arrange.

Want a local guide? Book a Mazatlán city tour in an open air pulmonía to see Old Mazatlán and the malecón.

SheBuysTravel Tip: The climb to El Faro is steep, with roughly 300 steps on uneven terrain, so go early to beat the heat and wear closed-toe shoes.

When Is The Best Time To Go

Fall and spring offer fewer crowds and lower rates, while winter is the peak season. Mazatlán is wonderful in the dry season (November to April). If you’d like a chance to catch a passing whale, visit in the winter months. Flight options can vary by season, so check flights from your region before you book.

Dreams Estrella del Mar Mazatlán Golf & Spa Resort is wonderful in that it’s not just an all-inclusive box. It’s a genuine family destination for groups of all sizes with local flavor, fewer crowds and an easy, more affordable stay. Might it be perfect for your next getaway?
