Tucked along the scenic coast of South Carolina, Fripp Island is one of the lesser-known destinations among the state’s barrier islands, which makes it one of the top spots for unforgettable Fripp Island family vacations. Known for its pristine beaches, championship golf and laid-back charm, Fripp offers families the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation.

As a mom of three who finally found her vacation zen amongst the live oaks and ocean views, I’m sharing why this island should be on your family’s vacation radar.

What Makes Fripp Different From Its Neighbors

Neighboring islands, like Hilton Head Island, may be more well-known, but that comes with larger crowds. Sure, you’ll find some of the biggest family resorts in South Carolina on Hilton Head Island, but that typically comes with sky-rise buildings.

Fripp Island is void of tall buildings. It’s a gated residential island without a traffic light. Visitors trade vehicles for golf carts and bikes. Unlike Hilton Head Island, the only traffic is caused by the island’s deer, which roam freely. I love that guests aren’t clamoring for a lounge chair at one of the six pools or fighting for a spot on the beach. With two championship golf courses and 3 ½ miles of pristine beach, there’s plenty of recreation to go around.

Why Kids Love Fripp Island Family Vacations

I crave a family vacation that includes time to reconnect with my partner, and, surprisingly, Fripp Island is the perfect destination to do so. The resort offers a year-round event calendar that’s full of kid-friendly activities. From Gatorology to craft sessions, there’s a plethora of activities designed for kids.

Amongst them are kid-only classes, like Dock Discovery. Led by a naturalist, kids scrape the underside of the dock to see what type of life lurks below, while parents can use the time to reconnect. During the peak summer season, parents can sign kids up for half or full-day “Camp Fripp” sessions. This is the perfect excuse to drop off the kids and enjoy a tee time. The opportunity to take in the resort’s offerings as a couple, while traveling with kids, is priceless.

World-Class Championship Golf With Views

Fripp Island is a dream destination for golf lovers and a highlight of many Fripp Island family vacations. The island features two championship courses that combine challenging play with stunning coastal scenery. The Ocean Point Golf Links, designed by George Cobb, offers sweeping Atlantic Ocean views and holes that play right along the shore.

The Ocean Creek Course, created by Davis Love III, winds through salt marshes and lagoons for a true Lowcountry experience. Both courses showcase the natural beauty that makes Fripp Island so special, giving golfers the perfect mix of competition and relaxation surrounded by breathtaking views.

How to Get to Fripp Island

The largest neighboring city to the private island is Beaufort. While the island feels miles away due to the serene surroundings, it’s surprisingly easy to reach from several major cities and airports in the region.

  • Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) – About 1 hour and 45 minutes away. This is the closest major airport, offering a wide range of domestic and international flights.
  • Charleston International Airport (CHS) – Roughly 2 hours from Fripp Island, this is another convenient option with extensive flight connections.
  • Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) – About 3.5 hours south, a good choice for travelers exploring more of the coastal Southeast.

For guests who prefer to drive, it’s easy to reach Fripp Island by driving along U.S. Highway 21 South through Lady’s Island and across the scenic bridges of the Lowcountry.

Easy Day Trips From Fripp Island

One of the best parts of Fripp Island family vacations is how close the island is to some of the Lowcountry’s most charming destinations. Just 10 miles away, Hunting Island State Park offers miles of unspoiled beach, scenic trails and the historic Hunting Island Lighthouse. It’s great for kids who want adventure.

A short 30-minute drive brings you to Beaufort, a picture-perfect coastal town known for its waterfront park, local shops and delicious seafood restaurants. Families can explore historic streets, take a carriage tour or enjoy a relaxed afternoon by the river.

If you’re up for a longer outing, both Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina, make memorable day trips filled with history, architecture and Southern charm.

Tips For Booking Your Fripp Island Family Vacation

Fripp Island Resort offers vacation homes of all sizes, managed directly by the resort. Decide on how many guests will be attending because Fripp is perfect for multigenerational travel. I recommend Fripp for grandparents and extended family. It’s easy to bike or take a golf cart anywhere around the island, but think about the type of views you want to wake up to: beach, golf courses or marshland.

SheBuysTravel Tip: If you book directly through Fripp Island Resort, guests receive a complimentary golf cart with their stay. Even though Fripp boasts smaller crowds than its neighbors, there’s still a peak summer season. Avoid holiday weekends for fewer crowds.
