Hilton Head Health Goes Beyond the Blue Zones Experience

Hilton Head Health offers a range of wellness programs, and the Blue Zones Experience represents one program within the resort, not the entire

Sweetgrass Inn

The Blue Zones Lessons That Stuck With Me

The Blue Zones focus on nine lifestyle and dietary habits found in regions where people live the longest, healthiest lives.
- The Power 9: Blue Zones principles mean natural movement, purpose, downshifting, participating in a faith or spiritual community and making space for friends and family.
- What and How You Eat: The program encourages eating until you’re 80 percent full, a primarily plant-based diet and wine in moderation with friends and food.
- The Most Valuable Lesson Was Connection: I’m already focused on exercise, but what resonated most was connecting with others. I’m introverted and content to be solitary outside my immediate family, so I came home with a renewed focus on social connection.
SheBuysTravel Tip: If you do the Blue Zones at Hilton Head Health, make sure you set aside time when you come home to go through the workbook exercises.
What Didn’t Work for Me

I struggled most with the social connection aspect and the “Plant Slant” diet emphasizing beans and vegetables over meat. I focus heavily on protein to build muscle, and I often felt hungry due to small portions. The soul-searching group workshops also felt uncomfortable for my introverted nature.
- Plant-based Takeaways: Learning practical culinary tips for incorporating tempeh and silken tofu into everyday meals.
- What I Loved Best: Gaining valuable cooking insights during interactive Healthy Kitchen chef demonstrations.
- Personal Takeaway: Recognize which lifestyle recommendations fit your body and personal comfort level.

What I Took Home From the Experience

- Take-home Workout: A personal trainer created a portable workout I could do anywhere, plus purchase recommendations for simple equipment I can carry in my suitcase.
- New Goal Unlocked: Build meaningful, regular connections outside my family. I like a lot of alone time but I’m more cognizant of the need to socialize.
SheBuysTravel Tip: Come with goals but be willing to do something outside your comfort zone or try something different, even if it ends up not being your thing.
