My home state of West Virginia is known as “the mountain state” for good reason. It’s the only state located completely inside the Appalachian Mountains. And its average elevation is higher than any other state east of the Mississippi.

Combine that with a unique culture and heritage, and West Virginia makes a fantastic place to experience. Picturesque landscapes can be explored in a plethora of ways.

From whitewater rafting in the summer to skiing in the winter, West Virginia offers something for every outdoor enthusiast.

And if you prefer to sit back and enjoy those scenic mountain views, there are plenty of ways to do that too. Shopping and exploring history are just a few.

Beckley is one of the best towns from which to explore authentic West Virginia. Located in the southern part of the state, it’s firmly rooted in the culture that defines West Virginia.

There’s also plenty to do, including adventures in the country’s newest national park, New River Gorge. The park is located 15 – 30 minutes from Beckley, depending on what part of the park you’re visiting. New River Gorge National Park is a fantastic place to raft or float as well as view the bridge that serves as the parks’ most well-known landmark.

Nearby Winterplace Ski Resort offers skiing in the winter and hiking and biking in warmer weather. Exhibition Coal Mine provides a peak into the industry vital to the state. And the Tamarack features tons of West Virginia-made goods to take home.

If the West Virginia country roads are calling you, here are 11 hotels in and around Beckley from which to explore them.

These places to stay may not be directly in the town of Beckley. But they’re very close and they offer a unique way to see the area.

From resort style lodging to a true adventurer’s outpost, these top-rated stays are worth checking out.

Ace Adventure Resort in Oak Hill

Located about a half an hour from Beckley, this resort is situated on 1500 acres. Ace is so unique that in 2010 the Travel Channel named it #1 in North America among the World’s Most Extreme Outdoor Adventure Resorts. And shows like CBS This Morning have featured it more recently.

Its rural location means you better print out directions before you come (yep, you might lose cell service.) But that’s all part of the adventure.

And that adventure is just beginning when you make the drive to Ace. Once there, whitewater rafting, ziplining, mountain biking, hiking, ATV tours and more are at your fingertips. They even offer massages if after all that adventuring you’re ready for some relaxation.

In addition to RV parking and camping, the resort offers a variety of cabin style lodging. The resort’s largest and nicest cabin which sleeps up to 18 people, has a full kitchen, hot tub, and 3 baths. Pricing for it starts at $799 per night. Bare bones cabins with no kitchen and bathrooms within walking distance start at $79 per night. Most cabin pricing falls somewhere in the middle.

Amenities vary widely depending on your cabin choice, but all cabins have access to:

  • A 5-acre waterpark in the lake (additional cost)
  • 3 on-site restaurants
  • Convenience store on property
  • Laundry services
  • Pet-friendly lodging ($50 USD per stay/only in specified cabins)
  • Free wifi in designated areas

I believe travel is one of life’s great educators. I use it to inspire my kids and myself to learn. In between shuffling kids to sports’ practices and homeschooling 2 of my children, I love to get away on family trips, couple’s retreats, and girls’ getaways. With 2 boys and 2 girls and 10 years between my oldest and youngest child, I know traveling can also be challenging. It requires a great plan. So, once the house is quiet, you’ll often find me with iPad in lap, researching my family’s next great adventure. I’ve found some travel gems, made lots of memories, and had my share of travel flops. I believe knowledge isn’t to be owned, but rather to be shared. So sharing what I’ve learned makes me (almost) as happy as getting the window seat on a plane. What really makes me happiest is writing about how we can use travel to make the world better than we found it. (What can I say? You can take the girl out of social work but you can’t take the social worker out of the girl.) You’ll also find a huge smile on my face when I’m writing about my first love (Disney), my newest love (traveling with teens), or my never ending love (practically anyplace I haven’t been before).
