Nestled in the Appalachian region of West Virginia and about an hour from Pittsburgh, PA, Morgantown’s claim to fame is being a true college town. As the largest college in the state, West Virginia University boasts an attendance of over 30,000 students.
Visitors flock to the area in the fall to cheer on (or root against) the Mountaineers during football season especially. Those visitors are also treated to beautiful fall foliage and close proximity to activities like white-water rafting, hiking, and biking.
College basketball season brings on another wave of visitors. Although they may miss the leaves changing colors, the small-town feel with a bustling college is still a plus.
WVU brings others to the area thanks to its top-rated medical center. Some also come to enjoy the mountainous region, nearby lake, and Coopers Rock.
As a born and bred West Virginian, I grew up traveling to Morgantown for football games and later became an alumni of the school. I raised my own children doing the same thing and am now the parent of a WVU student.
So, I’ve had the chance to check out many Morgantown hotels. And I’m outlining the top-rated hotels in Morgantown for your stay in Mountaineer Country.
1. Morgantown Marriott at Waterfront Place
Waterfront Place is conveniently located about a mile from the downtown WVU campus and 2 1/2 miles from the football stadium. With an upscale feel, it offers a great on-site restaurant, Bourbon Prime, and a full-service Starbucks.
The Waterfront is also within walking distance of some of the best restaurants in town. (Our family’s favorite is Oliverio’s, a nice nod to the area’s Italian heritage.) The riverside walking trail adjacent to the hotel provides easy access to those restaurants, some breweries, and a playground.
The hotel’s 200+ guest rooms are located on 9 floors. A conference center is available for meetings. We find the family-friendly suites a good choice for larger families like ours as well. Monongahela River views are available in some rooms.

2. Hotel Morgan – A Wyndham Hotel
If you love a good story, you’ll enjoy Hotel Morgan. This historic hotel first opened its doors in 1925. It soon hosted the likes of Eleanor Roosevelt and, later, President Harry Truman.
Throughout the nearly 100 years that followed its opening, it fell on both good times and bad. Its location in the heart of downtown Morgantown made it an essential part of the town’s landscape.
In 2020, the 3-star hotel received its latest of many renovations.
Now a Wyndham property, the boutique hotel has a mid-century decor. At the front desk check-in area with green-tasseled retro keys, you’ll notice a nod to the past. It also has a hip, quaint cocktail bar.
Parking at the hotel is located across the street. Valet parking is available on weekends. No suites or connecting rooms are available.

3. Residence Inn by Marriott Morgantown Medical Center Area
The Residence Inn by Marriott is the closest hotel to the Morgantown medical center. It’s also the closest lodging option to Mountaineer Field, as the hospital and stadium share a parking lot.
Rooms fill up fast for home football games. But, if you’re lucky enough to snag one you’ll enjoy a great tailgating spot. Any time of the year you’ll enjoy friendly staff in this all-suites hotel.
And you’ll be close to a PRT (Personal Rapid Transit Station), WVU’s transportation service in the university area.

4. Euro-Suites Hotel
The independently owned Euro-Suites hotel is another lodging option that’s iconic to Morgantown. Its potentially walkable location from WVU Stadium has made it a popular choice for decades.
The hotel’s roomy 2-room suite layout with kitchenettes makes it a family-friendly choice. Four extra large suites also offer full kitchens.
Euro-Suites’ location next to Kegler’s Sports Bar makes it a nostalgic choice thanks to the laidback bar’s long history in Morgantown. (Although the hotel’s own lounge has provided some fun after-game get-togethers on property over the years as well.)
The free shuttle even helps get guests where they need to be.

We really like this location at University Town Centre. Although it’s not as close to things as the hotels listed above, it’s still a convenient location. The hotels and businesses have been around here for a while but it’s still a more newly developed area of town.
And this hotel in particular is perched high, offering a view of the town.
The on-site bistro at the Courtyard is nice, offering Starbucks coffee in the morning. The fire pit outside and oversized chairs in the lobby are good extras. And the noon check-out gives you a little more time to get back on the road after a stay here.

6. Hampton Inn Morgantown
If you’re planning to visit Morgantown for a Mountaineer basketball game, the Hampton Inn Morgantown has a convenient location. Situated on Van Voorhis Road, the 3 star hotel is about a mile from the WVU Coliseum.
It’s also conveniently located to the Evansdale campus of WVU and Mountaineer Field.

This 3-star hotel is located in Suncrest Towne Centre, with access to shops and restaurants nearby.
The hotel is a mile from the WVU Morgantown Medical Center area. Mountaineer Field and WVU Coliseum are about 3 miles away. It’s a good location in between the Cheat Lake area and the college campus.

Football fans like this property because of its location. It’s just ¾ mile and within walking distance to the Mountaineers Football Stadium. So, it’s also close to WVU Hospitals.
This IHG Hotel has a relaxed feel and is clean and comfortable. Small outdoor patio tables and a brightly colored lobby feel welcoming.
An on-site restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating makes grabbing a meal easy.

The collegiate theme of the Scholar Morgantown Hotel is pulled off well in the lobby of this hotel, complete with a fireplace.
This lower-priced property has just about 40 rooms and is located in the heart of downtown. It’s a short walk to the WVU downtown campus as well to the businesses located in the city center.
Suites are available, although they don’t offer a 2-room setup. Small refrigerators are available.

The Cranberry is a great hotel pick located near Lakeview Golf Resort.
Although farther from the city center than others on our list, the Lakeview area offers something different. On busy weekends, it’s a less crowded option, although the bar next door, Tropics, is lively.
This Choice Brands Hotel offers breakfast at a nominal cost of $5. It also has balconies, refrigerators, and microwaves in some (but not all) rooms.

Friendly front desk staff welcome guests to the Granville property.
The location works well for those passing through the area or those who want to visit WVU without staying downtown.
All rooms have refrigerators, microwaves, and coffee makers while studio suites have a bit more room. Select studio suites also offer a whirlpool tub.

Even though this hotel is 2 1/2 stars, it has good hotel reviews thanks to all it has to offer.
Its northwest location in town means it’s a little farther from WVU. And it’s close to Interstates 79 and 68.
Restaurants and other conveniences are close by. And being a bit farther from town can equate to some lower rates as well.

14. Holiday Inn Express
This IHG Hotel is one of the closest on our list to Morgantown Municipal Airport. The airport offers daily service to Pittsburgh International Airport and Washington Dulles Airport.
The hotel is situated near the Mileground area of town with close access to Highway 68 as well. Cheat Lake and Coopers Rock are a few outdoor activities that are a bit closer than at some of the other hotel options.
Over a dozen suites are available in addition to standard rooms.

This all-suite, 2-star hotel is an IHG Hotel located off the Star City/ Westover exit in Morgantown. It’s about 3 miles from WVU and close to restaurants like Texas Roadhouse and Olive Garden. Several fast food options are close as well.
Billed as more of an extended stay option, this hotel’s 84 rooms are also available for shorter stays. The kitchenette comes in handy either way. And the books and DVDs for kids, as well as the grill available for use, are a nice touch.
This hotel often comes up as the cheapest hotel that still gets decent reviews.
