Why Start With A One-Night Rafting Trip?

I love the idea of outdoor adventure. In my imagination, I’m the kind of person who effortlessly pitches a tent at sunset, cooks over an open fire and wakes up refreshed to the sound of birdsong. But the reality is rather less glamorous.

Family camping trips often involve enough preparation to launch a small military operation. There are tents to pack, sleeping bags to remember, meals to plan and endless opportunities to hear the words, “Did you bring my…?”

By the time we arrive, I’m usually exhausted from organizing the adventure rather than enjoying it.

So when I discovered an overnight rafting and glamping experience on California’s Kern River with Momentum River Expeditions, I was intrigued.

A four- or five-day rafting trip sounds incredible, but it’s a big leap if you’re not sure how your family will cope with being outdoors, sharing limited space, losing phone signals or spending several days away from everyday comforts.

Could one night really deliver the excitement of a wilderness escape without requiring a week away from home?

For us – me, my husband and teenage son – the journey began with a three-hour drive from Los Angeles to Kernville, a charming mountain town around 42 miles northeast of Bakersfield.

We stayed overnight at the family-owned Piazza’s Pine Cone Inn before our rafting adventure, which gave us time to slow down and enjoy the area.

The next morning, we grabbed coffee and pastries from Sequoia Mountain Bakery before heading to meet the Momentum River Expeditions team.

Within minutes of arriving, meeting the team and taking in the scenery, I knew this experience was going to feel very different from every camping trip I’d ever organized.

SheBuysTravel Tip: The best family adventures aren’t always the longest ones. Sometimes 24 hours of trying something new together is enough to create memories that last for years.

The Power Of Women Guides

One of the biggest surprises of our rafting experience was how much the guides became part of the story.

By coincidence, every guide leading our trip happened to be a woman. It wasn’t presented as a headline or a marketing angle. They were simply incredibly skilled people doing what they loved.

Our guide, Shana, had rafted rivers everywhere from Alaska to South America. Whitewater rafting requires leadership, communication and trust, and she had the calm confidence of someone who understood the river completely.

She could read the rapids, give clear instructions and keep a raft full of first-time rafters relaxed – all while making everyone laugh. Watching her work was genuinely impressive (and also made me very grateful that it wasn’t me doing the heavy lifting!).

For my teenage son, seeing women confidently leading an outdoor expedition was particularly powerful. We often talk about encouraging young people to see possibilities beyond traditional roles, but this wasn’t a carefully staged lesson; it was real.

The confidence, humor and capability of the entire guide team transformed the experience from simply being a fun activity into something much more meaningful.

SheBuysTravel Tip: When choosing an adventure company, look beyond the activity itself. Experienced, knowledgeable guides can completely transform your trip from enjoyable to unforgettable.

Glamping And Relaxation For Moms: Camping Without The Chaos

The phrase “family camping trip” usually brings one immediate thought to mind. Work.

There is an enormous amount of packing, the unpacking, cooking, cleaning, traveling and schlepping. And somehow, the person who suggests “a relaxing weekend in nature” often ends up doing the most work.

This experience was completely different. Momentum describes the accommodation as luxury camping (aka glamping), but I prefer another phrase: concierge camping. Because that’s exactly what it felt like.

After a full afternoon on the river, we returned to camp where snacks were waiting and our riverside safari-style tent was ready. I didn’t have to assemble a tent, sleep on the floor, or worry about having enough chips and dips.

Inside our tent were real beds, and outside there were hammocks overlooking the river, where I napped while dinner was being prepared.

The sound of rushing water replaced traffic, the trees provided the backdrop and for once, I wasn’t responsible for making everything happen. As a busy parent, this felt revolutionary.

Dinner was served under a canopy as the sun disappeared behind the trees. Guests who had arrived as strangers were soon chatting like old friends, swapping stories about the day’s adventures.

It reminded me of summer camp – except this time, the adults got to enjoy it too.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Don’t underestimate the value of comfort when traveling with family. A little luxury – especially a proper bed and someone else handling meals – can make outdoor adventures enjoyable for everyone.

The Joy Of Unplugging: Why The Best Memories Happen Offline

There was one thing about the Kern River experience that initially caused some concern, and that was no cell service.

For teenagers, this can often be a personal tragedy, but here, the beauty of our surroundings and the power of the river quickly overcame any concerns about losing connectivity.

Instead of scrolling, we were swimming. Instead of checking notifications, we were laughing. Instead of watching other people’s adventures online, we were actually having one.

There’s something incredibly freeing about being somewhere that naturally removes distractions. Nobody needs to make a conscious decision to put their phone away. The environment does it for you.

Rafting requires attention, but I watched my son jump into the river with strangers he’d met that morning, who quickly became friends and had the time of his life.He wasn’t collecting content; he was collecting experiences.

I’ll take that kind of souvenir every time.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Allow yourself to embrace the digital detox. Take photos if you want to, but don’t spend the entire adventure documenting it. The best memories are often the ones you experience first-hand.

Packing Advice For A Kern River Rafting Adventure

One of the reasons this overnight rafting experience works so well for families is that Momentum River Expeditions takes care of the big stuff.

You don’t need to arrive with a car full of camping equipment or spend weeks creating a color-coded packing spreadsheet.

The essentials – rafting equipment, safety gear and camping setup – are already in place for you to enjoy. However, a few thoughtful additions will make your experience even more comfortable.

  • Water shoes. You’ll want footwear that can get wet, stay secure and cope with rocky riverbanks. Flip-flops might look tempting, but they are not your friend when you’re navigating uneven ground.
  • Sun protection. California sunshine is glorious, but several hours on the water means you’ll want a hat, sunglasses with a strap and lightweight layers to protect your skin.
  • A rash guard . Or even a quick-drying top is useful for families spending lots of time swimming or rafting.
  • A waterproof phone pouch . You’ll want to capture some moments, especially the expressions on everyone’s faces the first time they hit a big rapid. But you’ll also want reassurance that your phone won’t become an expensive river decoration.

For camp, think comfortable rather than complicated, so bring:

  • A warm layer for cooler evenings.
  • Insect repellent.
  • A flashlight or headlamp.
  • Comfortable clothes for relaxing after rafting.
  • A reusable water bottle.
  • Baby wipes (trust me on this one). They may not sound like the most glamorous travel accessory, but after a day on the river, you’ll understand their importance.

The beauty of this experience is that you don’t need to become a hardcore camper overnight. You’re not trying to survive in the wilderness – you’re simply there to enjoy it.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Pack for comfort, not conquest. This isn’t a survival challenge – you’re there to enjoy the river, relax by the campfire and make memories.

Are You Ready For The Multi-Day Expedition?

When we arrived at the Kern River, I was looking to answer one question: were we the kind of family who could handle a longer rafting expedition?

The overnight adventure gave us our answer. Yes. But more importantly, it helped us understand the reasons why. We discovered that we enjoyed the rhythm of river life. We loved the teamwork, being outdoors, slowing down – and I fell in love with glamping!

The experience gave us a taste of everything that makes multi-day rafting trips appealing without requiring a major commitment. It was adventurous without being overwhelming, and that’s why I think this is such a clever option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is rafting on the Kern River safe?

Yes. The Kern River offers a mix of exciting rapids and calmer stretches, making it a great option for families and first-time rafters looking for adventure without feeling completely out of their depth.

Safety is a major focus, and experienced guides provide instructions, equipment and support throughout the trip. Families should choose an adventure appropriate for their children’s ages and comfort levels.

What if I’ve never rafted before?

That’s exactly why an overnight trip is such a good introduction. You don’t need previous experience. The guides explain everything you need to know, and the trip balances exciting rapids with calmer sections of river.

Is glamping better than traditional camping?

That depends on what you enjoy. If you love setting up tents and cooking outdoors, traditional camping might be perfect. But if you want the beauty of nature without the logistics, glamping offers a wonderful compromise – especially for busy parents.

What’s the best time of year to go?

Spring typically brings higher water levels and more exciting rapids, while summer is ideal for families, with warmer temperatures and plenty of opportunities to enjoy swimming, rafting and relaxing.

For a first-time rafting trip, I’d recommend choosing a season that matches your comfort level. Warmer months can make the whole experience feel more relaxed, especially if you’re traveling with children.

Can I request women guides?

You can ask about guide preferences when booking, although specific assignments depend on availability and scheduling. Our all-women guide team happened by coincidence, but their expertise, confidence and humor became one of the highlights of our adventure.

How do I book a Kern River rafting trip?

Momentum River Expeditions offers a range of rafting experiences, including overnight adventures and longer expeditions, making it easy to choose the trip that suits your family’s confidence level and schedule.
