A chance reunion atop a mountain says it all. Orcas Island isn’t just a destination. It’s a place couples return to again and again, drawn by its quiet magic and deeply romantic pull. From windswept views to slow, soul-filling moments, this island invites you to reconnect with nature and with each other.
Highlights:
- The Scenery: I love driving the country roads with historic farms and big barns. Everywhere you turn there is a stunning view.
- Slower Pace: I slow down the moment I arrive on Orcas Island. I linger longer over my coffee sip a craft cocktail or glass of wine on a porch. The island invites wandering in a small town or a scenic beach
- My Secrets for Avoiding the Crowds: The best time to visit is before Memorial Day or after Labor Day for the best experience. No crowds and mild weather make it the perfect time to discover this romantic island.
- Tucked Away From the World: Orcas Island feels like another world and is very different than Seattle. No traffic, less people and plenty of wide open spaces.
- Connection: I found so many ways to connect as a couple. Adventurous activities, fine dining, exploring and so much more.
Serendipity is a wonderful thing. During my recent visit to Orcas Island, I ran into my friends, Michael and Estelle Rogers, at the top of Mount Constitution. What are the odds? Estelle shared their story of getting married in their early 20s. “We had no money for a honeymoon, so we went to Orcas Island and camped for a week.” They fell in love with the island, and 36 years later, the Oregon-based couple still visits, although the accommodations are much nicer. My husband and I feel the same way. Orcas Island is a special place, and we frequently visit. Arguably, it is one of the most romantic places in Washington and my go-to for a couple’s getaway.

Just Where is Orcas Island?

Orcas Island is part of the San Juan Islands chain off the coast of Washington. It is a 90-minute drive north of Seattle to Anacortes. Visitors catch the Washington State Ferry for a 60-90 minute ride to Orcas Island.
Fun Things To Do Together on Orcas Island
Walk the Labyrinth

The labyrinth at Emmanuel Episcopal Church is across the street from Outlook Inn. Labyrinths have a variety of meanings and uses. It can be a deeply romantic experience for couples, as it represents a shared path. Walk together or separately, meeting in the center. It can also be a metaphor for a shared life journey. Personally, I like to walk it with my morning coffee, taking in the incredible views.
SheBuysTravel Tip: At the annex by the labyrinth, there is a box with brochures that explain how to use the labyrinth.
Explore Deer Harbor

The route to Deer Harbor follows country roads, bypassing historic farms and barns before arriving at this quaint hamlet. Charter a boat at the marina to go whale watching, fishing or a visit to one of the uninhabited islands. During my visit in the early season, everything was closed, but I still enjoyed walking around and exploring. There is something about the sounds of seagulls and the smell of saltwater breezes that is so relaxing.
Visit Orcas Island Art Galleries

Artists on Orcas Island are raised here or settle here due to its scenic beauty which inspires their work. The island hosts several galleries. Some artists have their own spaces, and others belong to The Orcas Island Artworks, a cooperative of 40 artists who live and work on the island. I love historic buildings and this was a former strawberry barreling plant. Learn all about it on the interpretive sign near the front door.
A few I love to visit:
- Orcas Island Pottery – Opened in 1945, it is iconic with lots of history and quirky charm. I love to stroll through the property which feels more like a garden than a shop. Peeking into each building you’ll find something new every visit.
- Peter Möhlman Fine Arts – Peter’s style is unique with his landscapes influenced by Impressionism with a Pacific Northwest flare. Colors are bright versus muted and he works in watercolor and acrylic. He also offers art classes at his waterfront gallery.
- Crow Valley Gallery – Opened in 1959, this gallery features local and Pacific Northwest artists. Media include: pottery, paintings, jewelry and sculpture.
Wander Moran State Park

Start your visit to Moran State Park with a drive to the summit of Mount Constitution, the highest point on the island. Tour the Summit Visitor Center to learn more about the area. I was blown away by the views the first time I climbed the Mount Constitution Lookout Tower. It is an unforgettable experience to view the San Juan Islands, Mount Baker and the Puget Sound from this height. There are hiking trails for all levels and plenty of picnic spots. Stop at Cascades Lake to enjoy the beautiful lake and old-growth trees. In warmer months, take a dip in the clear, mountain-fresh lake or rent a kayak. I can see why camping here was such a special honeymoon for Michael and Estelle. It’s worth waking up in a tent to experience the natural beauty of this park.
SheBuysTravel Tip: Parking at the Mount Constitution summit is limited during peak weekend hours. Aim to arrive at the Moran State Park gates by 9:00 AM to enjoy the lookout tower before the midday crowds arrive.
Shop at Women-Owned Businesses

I am passionate about supporting local, small businesses and especially love to find women-owned places. Orcas Island has such a variety of shops throughout the island.
Three worth checking out:
- Girl Meets Dirt – Local heritage fruit becomes magical when owner Audra Lawlor transforms it into unique jams and bitters.
- Monkey Puzzle – Owner Sallie Bell’s store is filled with her creations, each as unique as she is. Take the time to speak with her when you visit, each of her works have a story.
- The Bubblery & Boardwalk Collective – Women living on the island created over 90% of the handcrafted skincare, perfumes and artisan products sold here. I could have spent hours here, so many wonderful products tucked into the space. It is close to the ferry landing so you can visit while waiting for the ferry.
Intimate Dining: The Best Orcas Island Restaurants for Couples

Small, intimate restaurants on Orcas Island set the stage for romance with waterfront views and cozy spaces. The variety is surprising for such a small island. Enjoy upscale dining or casual spots with grab-and-go for picnics around the island.
A Few of My Favorites:
- Farm-to-Table Romance at New Leaf Café – At the Outlook Inn, offers fine dining with seasonal local ingredients. I’m still dreaming about the decadent desserts.
- Madrona Bar and Grill – Located on the waterfront, with gorgeous views and a Pacific Northwest-inspired menu with fresh seafood as the highlight.
- Brown Bear Baking – I get coffee and a pastry every day of my stay. Owned by classically French-trained chefs, make this your daily stop for breakfast. French pastries, bread and heartier items.
- Olga Rising – Located in a cute island homestead in Eastsound with a lovely garden to dine in. Well packaged made to order sandwiches are perfect for a grab-and-go picnic. Try the Italian sandwich, it was so good and made with premium ingredients.
SheBuysTravel Tip: Double-check restaurant hours and make reservations. During slower seasons, many restaurants have limited hours.
Where to Stay: Luxury Accommodations with Waterfront Views

I fell in love with this property the moment I entered my room. Outlook Inn, a lovely historic main building, overlooks Fishing Bay. Thoughtful touches in the newly renovated rooms add to the ambiance with thoughtful touches, such as spa amenities in the bathrooms. Luxury touches include heated towel racks. Landscaping and scenic views make the outside feel as luxurious as the inside.
Thoughtful touches in the newly renovated rooms enhance the romantic ambiance.
- Why I Recommend the Water’s Edge Suites – Built over the water for stunning views and privacy
- Location – Eastsound, Orcas Island’s main town, looks like the set from a Hallmark movie. Hand holding a must while exploring this charming town.
- Island Romance Retreat – A two-night stay with a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Brut Champagne and other romantic amenities.
- Real Life Escape – Unwind and destress with the slower pace of Orcas Island
Essential Travel Logistics: Mastering the Washington State Ferries

Most visitors to Orcas Island arrive by ferry from Anacortes, Washington. Enjoy a cruise through the San Juan Island chain before arriving at Orcas Island. Make a reservation for each direction. Check the schedule, as some routes are more direct than others. Even with a reservation, you must arrive 45 minutes before departure. Both terminals have scenic views and nice areas to walk and explore a bit. Loudspeakers announce when you need to return to your car.
SheBuysTravel Tip: Make sure you are in the reservation section on the website. There is a separate online area to pay for the ferry, but it does not make a reservation. Visitors can prepay for the ferry, but it is not necessary. The fee is round-trip.
