As the author of 100 Things to Do in Tacoma Before You Die, I’ve sat in enough I-5 traffic to last a lifetime. If you’re heading to a FIFA World Cup 2026 game, trust me, today is not the day to risk it. Base yourself in the South Sound and let Sound Transit handle the driving with easy options to and from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and Lumen Field Stadium. Instead of watching a car bumper, enjoy incredible views of the Salish Sea and Mount Rainier.
How I would get around:
- The Sounder Commuter Train: Take the Sounder and skip insane parking prices
- The T-Line Advantage: Use the T-Line to get around Tacoma without a car
- Sound Transit Express Buses: Hop on the 574 bus for a ridiculously easy airport run.
- FIFA World Cup 2026 Day of Game Tips: Everything you need to know for game day.
SheBuysTravel Tip: Download the Transit GO Ticket app for a convenient way to purchase bus, rail and water taxi tickets with your phone and never wait in line.
The Sounder Commuter Train

The Sounder Commuter Train will bypass the I-5 parking lot and take soccer fans from the Tacoma Dome Station to the King Street Station. Then it is just a short walk to Lumen Field, where six FIFA World Cup 2026 matches will take place.
Look for Sounder Game Trains added for each game. I love getting on the train in Tacoma because it’s not full yet, so you can grab a seat. Sit on the right side of the train for majestic views of Mount Rainier.

The T-Line Advantage

I use Tacoma’s T-Line constantly to navigate downtown. It’s a breeze to get from hotels to the Tacoma Dome station, where you catch the Sounder Commuter Train or a Sound Transit Express Bus. During the FIFA World Cup 2026, the T-Line will run every 12 minutes and run later on evening game days.
SheBuysTravel Tip: I like to treat the T-Line as the perfect designated driver for a downtown pub crawl. Tacoma’s craft beer scene is legendary, and many of the T-Line stations are near breweries.
The Sound Transit Express Buses: My Sea-Tac Travel Hack

While everyone else is fighting for a $120 rideshare at Sea-Tac, you’re going to walk straight to the Sound Transit 574 Express .
I actually prefer this over the train for airport runs because it’s a straight shot, no luggage-shuffling or transfers required. It drops you right at the Tacoma Dome Station, where you can catch the T-Line to get to your hotel.
But a word of warning for match day: If you’re using the 594 Express to get to Lumen Field, give yourself a massive buffer. I’ve lived here long enough to know that when I-5 decides to back up, it can last an hour or more. If the Sounder train is available, take it. If you have to take the bus, aim to be at the 4th Ave S & Jackson St stop at least three hours before kickoff so you can soak up the atmosphere instead of staring at a bus driver’s headrest.
FIFA World Cup 2026: Survival Tactics for Game Day

My No. 1 recommendation for a great game day experience in Seattle: have a plan. In addition to hosting more than 750,000 soccer fans from around the world, the summer season peak Alaska cruise season.
It is going to be packed everywhere.
Here’s how to avoid the chaos (and not lose your mind getting around).
- Get There Early (seriously): The stadium opens three hours early; be there when the gates swing open. If you have time, wander the nearby International District and grab a bite to eat. It won’t be as crowded as the eateries near the stadium.
- The North-Bound Shuffle: This is my favorite “pro” move. When the match ends, King Street Station (the stop closest to the stadium) will be a sea of humanity. Instead of fighting the crowd, walk 10 minutes north to Pioneer Square or University Street . Grab a post-game snack, let the first wave of crowds pass, and board the train or bus a few stops early. You’ll actually get a seat while everyone else is standing shoulder-to-shoulder.

FAQs
No, you can’t drink alcoholic beverages on any Sound Transit. Save the beer for the stadium; transit security doesn’t play around, and you don’t want to get booted before kickoff.
Yes, but I would definitely stay in a group. The additional security added for the FIFA World Cup 2026 games makes me feel more comfortable commuting later at night.
There are no group tickets. I recommend using the Transit GO Ticket App because you can activate multiple tickets on one device.
Check the Sound Transit Trip Planner, which has several options. I recommend trying to catch Sound Transit Express Bus 594, as it runs later than the Sounder Commuter Trains and requires no transfer. Ride share services such as Uber and Lyft are my last resort, as they will cost $150 or more.
