Traveling is a gift you can give yourself repeatedly, time and time again. There are countless unforgettable memories created when you embark on a new adventure. As parents, we can share the life lessons learned through various travel experiences with our kids. From seeing how big the world really is to growing and changing from your adventures, travel is the best teacher.
4 Reasons Why Travel Is The Best Teacher
As mom to three young girls, I want to share with my kids the unique ways in which travel is the best teacher. When you load up your suitcase and head out on your next trip, you never know what unexpected events might lay ahead of you. Different travel experiences have a way of pushing you outside of your normal routine. Exploring new destinations can be compared to being handed a key to a door, it’s up to you to see what’s on the others side. Here are four reasons why I think travel is the best teacher, and I am an avid student!
1. You See How Big the World Really Is
My children are being raised in a small town in the middle of East Texas. I really appreciate some of the amazing benefits you get from growing up in a small town. We have a great sense of community and life tends to be a little less hectic. However, I don’t want to limit their understanding or knowledge of this great big world.
Even if all your adventures are within your own country, you can explore more than the typical destinations that are popular among families. Why not road trip to less common places? Perhaps stay at beautiful less common state parks or explore a town that’s no one’s ever heard of. Knowledge is power, so let’s teach our kids that there is a great big world outside of their hometown.
2. You Become Captivated by Your Surroundings
I’ll never forget the first time my kids saw the ocean and watched as the waves crashed beside their tiny feet. Or the excitement in my 5-year old’s voice as we were cave exploring in the Dominican Republic. The world has so much beauty that even if I traveled my entire life I wouldn’t be able to experience it all. From the rain forest to the desert, there are an endless amount of breathtaking views.
Looking back on pictures I’ve taken, I get saddened by how they cannot possibly do justice to seeing it with my own eyes. I look forward to seeing my children’s faces light up as we approach some place new. There are no words that can accurately express what it feels like to stand and look out at the vast depth of the Grand Canyon. How can I explain to someone the sounds that flood out of the jungle while kayaking in Costa Rica? These are moments and memories that I will cherish all my life. Beauty is everywhere, let’s go find it!
3. You Can Embrace All Things Unique and Different
One of the best experiences I’ve had with my kids is when we took them to another country where the language spoken was completely different from ours. This had a huge impact on my children. They couldn’t believe that for the first time they were the minority and not the majority. This experience became an amazing teaching opportunity. Our language, culture, or skin color isn’t the only one out there and children should be exposed to different nationalities.
I will never forget the first time I tried fresh ceviche overlooking the Pacific Ocean while in Costa Rica. Seeing new sights and trying new foods are ways in which we embrace the gift of travel. Our family makes it a point to try unique dishes in every place we visit. I want my kids to understand that appreciating different people, places, and foods is a special part of our adventures together. I want them to learn from it, to grow from it, and to become a better person for what they have experienced!
4. You Grow and Change From The Experience
It’s such an unforgettable feeling to step off a plane in a place you have never been before. There are so many times I find myself having to step outside of my comfort zone to embrace the new experiences. You learn a lot about yourself during solo travel trip and you create priceless memories when traveling as a family.
When you travel, you must be willing to open your mind and heart. You get to learn more about yourself and more about the world around you. Sometimes, you get put into situations that test you and when you get through that experience you are braver, stronger, and more determined than ever.
Travel Is The Best Teacher
