How I Mastered Traveling with Gifts
I look forward to visiting family over the holidays. It’s a time filled with laughter, hugs and dessert! But there’s stress too. Especially when you need to travel with gifts. With family living overseas, I’ve developed tested hacks to help you deliver your presents without drama. Santa would be proud.
The first time I traveled with gifts for the holidays, I committed every rookie mistake.
- I purchased bulky, breakable presents that consumed way too much space in my carry-on duffel.
- I wrapped them. I got lucky and passed through TSA. Other passengers weren’t as lucky, and their lovingly wrapped gifts were opened.
- And I’ve been dinged with a fee for an overweight checked bag.

And it doesn’t mean traveling with a handful of boring gift cards.
Choose the Right Travel Gear for Gifts

When choosing a bag to transport your holiday gifts, it’s important to have a flexible space to accommodate items that vary in size. I avoid hard-shell suitcases because, in the past, I’ve had to crush boxes to make them fit.
A soft-sided expandable suitcase has more give so you can minimize potential damage to your gifts. I prefer a carry-on with a frame, but a duffel works too, with proper packing technique.
Cushion, But Don’t Wrap

If your gift, in a checked or carry-on bag, catches the eye of TSA, they will inspect it. If you’ve prewrapped, it will get opened. And TSA won’t rewrap it for you.
You can put presents in gift bags, but I find it’s easier to wait and wrap after you arrive.
Without protective wrapping paper and bows, you’ll definitely want to cushion your presents inside your bag.
Wrapping delicate items inside cozy sweaters is a technique I always use. The sweaters have enough stretch and padding to protect fragile gifts like candles.
Carry-on Only? Think Small

I bounce between checking bags and traveling light with just a carry-on. On those occasions, when I want to travel with a duffel and spacious tote, I pack a capsule wardrobe.
If I’m really strapped for space, I leave my toiletries at home and purchase items at a local pharmacy when I land. It’s a practical option if I’m staying for a few weeks.
But for a short stay, I bring small, TSA-sized toiletries to maximize my carry-on space, like:
- Natural premium toothpaste from Davids
- The EYURS compact travel skincare set
- Tiny but mighty eco-chic hair products

SheBuysTravel Tip: Speaking of small, tuck unwrapped stocking stuffers inside your socks, then inside your shoes.
What Goes, Must Return. Or Does It?
I’ve traveled to Europe with an entire checked suitcase filled with Christmas gifts for my family. I told them in advance that I wanted nothing in return and they listened. Since I had to pay to check my suitcase on the return trip, I put my carry-on inside.
And vowed not to repeat this scenario.
And I haven’t. Now, in advance of my holiday trip, I poll my friends to see if they have a suitcase they want to pitch. Someone always does. I fill it, Santa-style, and, when it’s empty, I leave it with a local thrift shop before heading home.
And I retain the option of hitting the after-Christmas sales and returning home with a suitcase full of fun.
Frequently Asked Questions
No, you should not pre-wrap gifts. If TSA needs to inspect an item in either your carry-on or checked luggage, they will unwrap it. Instead, put gifts in gift bags or wait until you reach your destination to wrap them.
A soft-sided expandable suitcase is recommended because it offers more flexibility to accommodate various gift sizes without crushing them. Framed carry-on bags or duffels also work well with proper packing.
Cushion fragile gifts by wrapping them inside clothing like cozy sweaters. The stretch and padding of clothing help protect delicate items like candles during transit.
To maximize gift space when traveling light, pack a capsule wardrobe and carry small, TSA-sized toiletries.
