Wedding season has officially become travel season. More couples are turning their weddings into full weekend experiences, whether that means a destination celebration, a mountain getaway, a coastal town or simply gathering friends and family in a city everyone has to fly into.

Highlights

  • More weddings are now “destination” weddings, which means you’ll have to pack your formalwear.
  • It’s possible to find wedding-appropriate clothing that packs easily, even in a carry-on.
  • Brands increasingly are offering versatile options that go from travel deys to rehearsal dinners to brunch the day after.

According to recent wedding industry trends, destination weddings and multi-day wedding events continue to grow in popularity as couples prioritize experiences and extended celebrations over traditional one-day events.

For guests, that means packing has gotten a little more complicated.

It’s no longer just about finding one dress for the ceremony. There’s often a welcome party, rehearsal dinner, brunch the next morning, travel days, dinners with friends and all the social moments in between.

I’m heading to North Carolina for a wedding and, like almost every trip I take, I’m attempting to do it carry-on only. That immediately changes how I shop and pack for wedding weekends because every item has to earn its place in my suitcase.

Thankfully, brands like Fortunate One are redefining occasion wear by focusing on pieces that work far beyond the ceremony itself.

What I Look for When Packing for a Wedding Weekend

When I’m packing for a wedding trip, especially a short weekend getaway, I try to build outfits around a few key things:

  • lightweight fabrics
  • wrinkle-friendly materials
  • dresses that can be styled multiple ways
  • comfortable silhouettes
  • neutral accessories that work with every outfit

One of the biggest trends right now is moving away from the “one-wear dress” mindset, and honestly, I think that’s something more travelers are embracing. If I’m packing a dress into a carry-on suitcase, I want to know I’ll wear it again.

Fortunate One recently curated a collection built around this exact concept: occasion wear that doesn’t stop at the ceremony.

Some standout styles include:

These are the kinds of dresses that feel elevated enough for a wedding while still being easy to style casually afterward.

For the ceremony itself, I love pairing a flowy maxi dress with:

It creates a polished, intentional look without feeling overly formal or difficult to wear.

Then for brunch the next morning or casual daytime plans, you can completely transform the same outfit by:

That simple styling shift makes the dress feel relaxed, effortless and wearable again without needing to pack an entirely separate wardrobe.

How to Pack Wedding Guest Dresses in a Carry-On

As someone who almost always tries to travel with only a carry-on, I’ve learned that choosing the right fabrics and silhouettes makes all the difference.

Here are a few things that help:

Stick to a Coordinated Color Palette

Neutral shoes and accessories save so much space because they work with multiple outfits.

Use Packing Cubes

I separate outfits by event so I’m not unpacking my entire suitcase every time I need something.

Pack Dresses Near the Top

This helps reduce wrinkles and keeps delicate fabrics from getting crushed.
