Toddler Tips for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party

If you are thinking about heading to Disney with toddlers, Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party is a fantastic event perfect for your family! If you have a party ticket to this memorable event at Magic Kingdom get ready to be impressed. Note: The party has been canceled for 2020 due to Covid-19 and the coronavirus pandemic.

One of the most special Halloween experiences my family has ever had was at Walt Disney World for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party. (If you are on the west coast, Disneyland also offers this event.)

Our first time was a Disney with Toddlers adventure – at ages 5, 3, 2 and 4 months old.  Honestly, we were CRAZY to attempt this but it turned out so well.

We spent the night at the Magic Kingdom experiencing the thrilling special offerings while not having to deal with heavy crowds or even feel pulled to ride the rides. There’s just so much to see! From the all-new fireworks show (that’s 12 minutes long!) to really good trick-or-treating to the Boo-to-You Halloween parade like no other, it really is a night to remember.

Visiting Disney with toddlers – especially 4 of them – was tough, but so worth it. And Disney World makes it as easy as they can. When they say the party is “not so scary,” they really mean it. It is a family-friendly event perfect for everyone of every age. No one is going to jump out at you. No one will try to scare you. It’s all the treats of Halloween without any tricks!

Guests with little ones should make sure to save time for the Disney Junior Jam at Storybook Circus in Fantasyland. It’s designed for the Disney Junior set but parents will love it too. Look for Doc McStuffins, Timon and Vampirina at the dance party. New in 2019, you can also catch up with Fancy Nancy herself, Nancy Clancey!

Throughout the theme park, you will also be able to find toddler-friendly favorites like Winnie the Pooh, Aladdin and Cinderella for character meet and greets.

1. Extras at Select Attractions During Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party

Even if you have been there hundreds of times, there’s so much more to see during this event.  Magic Kingdom attractions are adorned as you’ve never seen them before, with some extras toddlers (and their parents) will flip for.

• Space Mountain: You may have zoomed through this popular indoor roller coaster before but have you done it to the new Halloween-inspired soundtrack? I get chills just thinking about it. Use the parent swap system to experience this ride while keeping up with your young children.
• Pirates of the Caribbean: This attraction is a perennial favorite for our family, and during Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party the lively crew of pirates is engaged in a spooktacular treasure hunt.
• NEW for 2019 Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor: There are treats and tricks in the Monster World as the monsters learn about the human holiday Halloween.
• Mad Tea Party: This classic attraction gets a Halloween enhancement and spooky, not-so-scary upgrades. 
• While not all rides have Halloween-centric additions, they may have shorter lines during this party than during regular hours. This includes rides that are especially fun for little ones such as Dumbo, Peter Pan, It’s a Small World and the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.

2. Disney’s Not So Spooky Spectacular Fireworks Show

Jack Skellington hosts this new fireworks spectacular that replaces the Hallowishes Fireworks display from the past. During this frightfully fun fireworks display, includes Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy along with dancing skeletons and ghosts and a gathering of the most beloved Disney villains!

In addition to fireworks, there are lasers, a light show, and state-of-the-art projection effects. Taking place at 10:15 p.m. nightly, it’s totally worth keeping even your little ones up. It’s totally “ahh” and “oooh” worthy.

Is Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular Show Too Scary? Maybe.

Guests can join the Sanderson Sisters from “Hocus Pocus” at the exclusive “Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular” show at the Castle Forecourt Stage. Along with other Disney villains, like my personal favorite, Maleficent, there is singing, dancing and lots of spirited fun. It’s one of Disney’s best shows, in my opinion.

However, some parts may startle little ones. If you are unsure if your children will be a bit scared, just skip it.

Note that if you are hoping to take photos afterward, you probably won’t be able to take individual photos with the Sanderson Sisters or the other Disney villains.

4. Spooktacular Boo-to-You Halloween Parade Toddler Tips

The Halloween spirit floats by twice each night as each land in the Magic Kingdom comes together to celebrate the fun of Halloween. If you have toddlers at Disney, be sure to look for the following:

1. 1. Of course, there are our favorite Disney friends,  Mickey Mouse, and Minnie Mouse, decked out in all-new Halloween costumes, trick-or-treating down Main Street, U.S.A.
   2. The Incredibles, Buzz Lightyear and others will represent Tomorrowland. To (Halloween) Infinity and Beyond!
   3. Wreck-It Ralph fans will adore seeing Vanellope von Schweetz and the rest of the girls from Sugar Rush giving out lots of sweet treats.
   4. Pirates will sail in from Adventureland while Clarabelle Cow from Frontierland hosts a down-home square dancing hoedown you’ll love to dance along with.
   5. In true not-so-scary tradition, Disney Villains will strut their fabulous stuff in a Fantasyland-inspired grand finale you’ll never forget! Even if you’re at Disney with toddlers, you are going to want to keep them up late and stay for this unbelievable show.

5. Know Before You Go to Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party with Toddlers

• • FastPass+ is not available during this special event. Generally there is less need for it though. Many guests tend to take advantage of the special offerings and not ride the rides as much.
  • Officially, the party at Disney World starts at 7 p.m. at Magic Kingdom. However, don’t wait until then! Guests with tickets to this event are allowed to enter the park as early as 4 p.m.
  • If you want to get a good look at the Halloween parade, secure a place along the route early! Look for the Headless Horseman to ride through Magic Kingdom park about 15 minutes before the Boo-to-You parade. Little ones will love the music and dancing during the festive parade.
  • Get your costumes ready! Many people go all out when it comes to costumes. Others, like my family, didn’t know to do this and just had on our regular Disney apparel. Keep in mind that for kids ages 13 and under, masks cannot cover the whole face.
  • There are more restrictive rules regarding costumes for Moms and Dads (and anyone ages 14+). Avoid layered costumes that surround the entire body. Capes cannot go below the waist and costumes may not reach the ground. Masks are not allowed for adults, but things like wings, plastic swords and tutus are ok.
  • Separate Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party admission is required to experience this event. The Magic Kingdom will close early those days to all other guests. Remember children under three years old always get in free at Disney World.
  • The candy here is real! There are over 15 treat stations to get your trick-or-treat on.  If your kids (or you) are looking to bring home a load of candy, you totally can. If you do not want a sugared-up toddler running around, just steer the stroller the opposite direction!
  • There are allergy-friendly trick-or-treating stations too. You can find them in Liberty Square Ticket Office and Town Square Theater.
