The Quiet Magic of the Prado: Early-Morning Access to Spain’s Greatest Art

Thousands visit Madrid’s Prado Museum daily to see over 8,000 paintings and 1,000 sculptures. This popularity means navigating crowds and limited views. My first visit felt inspiring yet overwhelming. Three floors of galleries filled with visitors made it hard to see iconic works clearly.

On a recent trip, I enjoyed the VIP Alone in the Prado: Exclusive Early Access Museum Tour Walks & Devour Tours, allowing a crowd-free, intimate experience.

If you want a unique visit to this historic museum, here’s what the VIP tour offers.

The writer was hosted.

Why I Took an Early Access Tour

Whether you visit museums regularly or have the Prado on your must-see list, early access offers an unmatched experience.

You enter the museum an hour before the public at 9 am, avoiding waiting in lines, crowds and distractions.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Skip the airport stress — Lyft’s On-Time Pickup Promise guarantees your scheduled ride shows up within 10 minutes of your pickup time. If it doesn’t? You’ll get Lyft Cash. You can schedule up to 90 days in advance and even lock in your rate. Use code SBT25 to save 25% off ONE scheduled ride to the airport.

I’ve done audio guides on other tours, but most are dull compared to a live guide. With early access, your guide shares the stories behind some of the world’s most famous art pieces. They delve into the meaning, not just give a quick overview.

This 90-minute tour satisfies curiosity by allowing you time to admire each piece up close.

Are you ready to explore off the beaten path? Let us inspire you!

What to Expect to See on the Tour

The tour takes you through pre-selected pieces. At the end of the tour, you’re allowed to stay in the museum. My suggestion is to visit the museum cafe for a beverage and then continue exploring.

Keep in mind, once you leave the museum, re-entry isn’t allowed.

Highlight 1: The Garden of Earthly Delights

The Garden of Earthly Delights is a large, beautifully complex painting by Hieronymus Bosch. Photos don’t capture the experience of standing a foot away from this three-panel masterpiece.

During the tour, you can admire the intricate details up close. Your guide will explain the painting’s symbolism and reveal characteristics many visitors overlook.

Highlight 2: The Mona Lisa

The Prado has its own version of the Mona Lisa, painted by one of Leonardo da Vinci’s students. Unlike the well-known painting behind layers of glass at the Louvre, the Prado’s version offers the chance to view this iconic subject up close to admire details.

The tour allows you time for an intimate moment with this mystery lady.

Highlight 3: Famous Paintings by Goya

If you have a general understanding of Spanish art, then you know the artist Francisco Goya. The Prado Museum preserves over 140 paintings by Goya. During the VIP tour, you’ll experience some of his most famous works.

Instead of being a passive observer, you’ll feel the emotions behind masterpieces like The Third of May 1808 and The Black Paintings. Your guide will dive into the stories and meanings known to very few.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Madrid is a popular tour destination. Planning a trip during the fall means fewer crowds and a more authentic experience.

Tips for Making the Most of the Tour

  • Dress comfortably: The tour involves a lot of walking and standing, so dress comfortably.

  • Engage with your guide: Ask questions and don’t be shy to respond to or engage with your guide. Trust me, they know a lot.

  • Take your time: It’s okay if you need a few minutes to admire the piece. Give yourself the chance to really take in the details.

  • Use the additional museum time. Ask your tour guide what they recommend you see, and use your time after the tour to explore.
