The writer was hosted.
As a travel writer who has covered Christmas towns across the country, Grapevine surprised me with how much it felt like a Hallmark movie town and I loved every minute of my visit.
Visiting in early December, I was swept into a holiday atmosphere, grand yet intimate. With vintage trains, countless holiday activities and cozy wine tasting rooms. Grapevine makes the perfect romantic Christmas getaway.

Why Grapevine for a Romantic Christmas?

It’s not just a catchy nickname; the Texas State Senate officially designated Grapevine as the Christmas Capital of Texas. The city takes this designation seriously, hosting more than 1,400 festive Christmas events in just 40 days, transforming the area into a true storybook destination.
It’s no wonder Newsweek voted it the Best Christmas Town. Whether you are walking hand-in-hand under millions of lights or sharing a quiet moment in a local winery, the atmosphere here is specifically designed to make you slow down and savor the season.
Romantic Activities and Attractions
Stroll Down Historic Main Street
The heart of the holiday magic pulses along Historic Main Street, where every storefront glimmers with romantic ribbons, evergreen wreaths and twinkling lights. The architecture, quaint and distinctly southern, invites dreamy strolls and quiet moments, offering a gentle escape from the sprawling Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
We spent hours wandering into unique boutiques, grabbing coffee at local cafes, admiring the lights and decorations, watching ice skaters and taking advantage of photo-op spots.
She Buys Travel Tip: Be sure to stop in the Visitor’s Center and check out the holiday displays and photo opportunities.

All Aboard the Grapevine Vintage Railroad

A highlight of our trip was the Grapevine Vintage Railroad. While families flock to the North Pole Express for a magical ride with Santa, a distinctively romantic experience awaits adults.
If you can snag tickets (we couldn’t), the locals highly recommend the Christmas Wine Train. It’s an ideal date-night outing, serving a flavorful dinner and complimentary wine as you travel in restored 1920s Victorian coaches. The ride blends train travel nostalgia with the refinement of wine tasting — a true win-win in my book.

She Buys Travel Tip: Tickets for the North Pole Express and the Christmas Wine Train sell out quickly, sometimes as early as October.
Immerse Yourself at the Gaylord Texan Resort

Even if you aren’t staying at the Gaylord Texan Resort, you must visit. It goes all out with Lone Star Christmas: millions of lights, lavish decorations. The festive energy is contagious.
The star of the show is ICE!, a walk-through attraction featuring scenes carved from two million pounds of ice. This year, the theme features scenes from the movie “Elf.” I loved the vivid colors of the ice.
Yes, it is freezing inside; the day I visited, it was 3 degrees (the resort provides parkas!), but cuddling up to stay warm while admiring hand-carved ice sculptures is actually quite romantic. The Ice Bar serves adult beverages inside the attraction. Afterward, you can warm up with hot chocolate in the Christmas Village.
She Buys Travel Tip: Be sure to pack a winter hat and gloves for ICE! I also wore fleece-lined leggings.
Catch a Classic Performance

Grapevine offers a rich holiday culture. We loved North Texas’s largest lighted parade, the Parade of Lights, where over 100 glowing floats brought out our inner child.
For a more relaxed evening, check the schedule at the Historic Palace Arts Center. It screens classic Christmas films throughout the season. Watching “It’s A Wonderful Life” or “White Christmas” on the big screen in a vintage theater is the perfect way to cap off a romantic evening.
Interactive Fun for Couples

While the lights and shows are spectacular, sometimes the best memories come from doing something active together. Shared adventures linger in your mind long after the holiday ends.
- Vetro Glassblowing Studio: We made ornaments here. I created a blue one from molten glass, and it was such a unique experience to craft a souvenir for our tree so we’ll remember this trip for years to come – it’s own form of romance!

- Rudolph’s Gift at Grapevine Escape: If you like puzzles, this is an excellent date activity. You have to help Mrs. Claus finish Rudolph’s gift before Santa arrives. It’s a great way to test your teamwork!

- Meow Wolf: Located at Grapevine Mills, this isn’t strictly “Christmas,” but exploring The Real Unreal is an unforgettable experience. It’s a psychedelic, immersive art installation that sparks great conversation.
- Grapevine Christmas Market: We wandered through the market, enjoying food vendors and even swallowing our pride to get a photo with Santa. It’s a classic tradition that never gets old.
- Peace Plaza Ice Skating: Lace up your skates and try the ice! I sat out due to a past ankle injury, but many others were enjoying themselves.

- Snow Tubing: We enjoyed this at the Christmas Village before heading to ICE!. You grab a tube, climb to the top and slide down. I admit, I did this several times. You and your partner can race if you wish.
Dining and Wine Experiences

You can’t visit Grapevine without indulging in the local wine scene. The Urban Wine Trail is fantastic. We sampled at Wine Fusion and tasted 100% Texas-grown wines at Bingham Family Vineyards.
For a truly festive vibe, don’t miss these spots:

- Christmas Cookie Wine Pairing at Winestein’s Tasting Room: This was a delightful afternoon activity that made us feel like wine geniuses (or at least, cookie connoisseurs).
- Winter Wonderland Bubbles at Hotel Vin: This was perhaps the most romantic setting of the trip. You sit in a private, heated “bubble” on the lawn, sipping champagne while surrounded by lights.

- Tolbert’s: For a more lively atmosphere, head to Tolbert’s for their famous chili and live music. It’s a Grapevine institution.
- Café Italia: A family-run Italian restaurant that’s become a favorite for couples seeking comforting classics with a warm, romantic vibe. Café Italia blends old-world flavors with small-town charm.
- Esparza’s Restaurante Mexican: This restaurant offers authentic Mexican cuisine, bold flavors, warm hospitality and festive margaritas. It is also known as the Margarita Capital of Texas and is perfect for a lively lunch or romantic dinner.

- Bonnie & Clyde’s Bar and Grill: Great place for a late-night drink or snack. I had dinner here as well and the food was delicious.
Holiday Shopping
If you still have gifts to buy, Grapevine makes it fun. Every storefront is a photo op, so window shopping is its own activity.
Historic Main Street features boutiques. For serious shopping, visit Grapevine Mills, North Texas’s largest shopping destination with tax-free shopping for international travelers.
Where to Stay for a Romantic Christmas Escape

Hilton DFW Lakes Executive Conference Center
The Hilton DFW Lakes Executive Conference Center is a quieter option for couples seeking lakeside calm. This is where I stayed during my visit. Set among walking paths and water views, it offers a peaceful retreat just minutes from Grapevine’s holiday excitement, ideal for couples who value space, serenity and convenience.
Hotel Vin
For couples who want to stay fully immersed in the holiday atmosphere, Hotel Vin is the top choice. Located at the entrance to Historic Main Street, it allows you to walk to shops, wine tastings, parades and restaurants without moving your car.
The lobby glows with seasonal décor and live music, while spacious rooms offer a calm retreat. Experiences like Winter Wonderland Bubbles make Hotel Vin part of the romance.
If walkability, wine and quiet matter most, Hotel Vin puts you in the perfect spot.
Gaylord Texan Resort
At the Gaylord Texan Resort, grand atriums, glowing displays and on-site attractions invite couples to wander, dine and linger in a festive world. After peak hours, the resort grows surprisingly romantic.
Couples-Only Tips

- Time your Main Street stroll after 9 pm. The lights stay on, the music softens and the sidewalks clear, creating a quieter, more intimate atmosphere.
- Opt for Sunday–Thursday nights. Weekdays are calmer, especially for wine tastings, hotel lounges and evening events.
- End the night, don’t start it, at the Gaylord. Visit ICE! and the atriums later in the evening when families head out, and the mood turns calmer.
- Choose experiences over attractions. Wine trains, ornament making and Bubbles create shared memories that feel more romantic than high-energy events.
- Walk instead of driving whenever possible. The slower pace encourages wandering, lingering and those spontaneous “let’s step in here” moments.
