It’s tough to find a family vacation publication that doesn’t put Williamsburg, Virginia, somewhere on its list of “bests”. And with so much to do, it’s no wonder why. The small town has a ton to offer. Historical sites, world-class museums, amusement parks, and a plethora of family activities make it worthy of those lists.
Wondering where to call home base to explore it all? I recommend Club Wyndham Governor’s Green. This sprawling resort is close to all the action and is a great Williamsburg hotel for families that need some extra space without breaking the bank.
The Pros of Club Wyndham Governor’s Green:

The Cons of Club Wyndham Governor’s Green:

Overview of the Resort
Club Wyndham Governor’s Green is a 3-star, condo-style property built in 2001. It’s one of three Wyndham properties located within a few miles of one another in Williamsburg. Club Wyndham Kingsgate is the largest of the three, while Club Wyndham Patriots’ Place is the smallest, with Governor’s Green right in the middle, with 380 units are divided among more than a dozen buildings.
Like its sister properties, Governor’s Green is a timeshare property. Owners of Club Wyndham timeshare points can use their points to book stays at the resort. The resort also can be booked through their parent company’s site, Extra Holidays.
The resort reflects Williamsburg’s colonial aesthetic. The 3-story condo buildings are brick and clapboard, painted in neutral tones and separated by pathways and lush, green lawns. The grounds are immaculate, with small walking bridges, water features and plenty of room to roam. Elevators are available for the second- and third-story units.
Pulling onto the property creates a great first impression as you round the drive, pass the security gate, and continue to the lodging area. The property is well-maintained, the buildings neat and pretty.
Location of Club Wyndham Governor’s Green
Governor’s Green is located at 4600 Mooretown Road, a great spot from which to explore Williamsburg. It’s situated to the north of three of the area’s most popular attractions. Colonial Williamsburg is three miles away. Busch Gardens and Water Country USA are about 11 miles from the resort.
Colonial Williamsburg is where visitors will find 301 acres filled with original and reconstructed buildings from America’s colonial period. Just on the outskirts of this land sits the college of William and Mary. And surrounding that, quaint restaurants and shops dot the landscape.
The resort runs parallel to Richmond Road, which has restaurants, grocery stores, and pharmacies. It’s also the place to find the 135 stores of Williamsburg Premium Outlets, along with Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum, a go-kart track, and miniature golf courses.
If you’re hoping to get some beach time while you’re close to the coast, Virginia Beach is about an hour away. Yorktown Beach, College Creek Beach, and Jamestown Beach are all under a half hour.
Room Types
Governor’s Green offers one, two, and three-bedroom units.
- The 1-bedroom units sleep four in 579 square feet of space with a king bed and pull-out sofa.
- The 2-bedroom units sleep 8 in over 1,200 square feet and consist of a king bed, two double beds, and a pull-out sofa.
- The 3-bedroom units are over 1,500 square feet. They have two king beds, two double beds, and a pull-out sofa.
Room Layout
Our 2-bedroom suite was decorated in a traditional style with beige, dark blue, and brown color schemes. It had dark wood furniture and white bed linens, with black-out drapes in the king room and room-darkening blinds in the double room. It was very clean and well-kept.
A sofa, two chairs and coffee table filled the spacious living room. A dining area with a table sat adjacent to the room.
The kitchen had granite countertops and was well stocked with all we needed during our stay. While we only cooked breakfast there, it was equipped with everything we would have needed for larger meals too.
The kitchen had a full refrigerator, microwave, oven, dishwasher, coffee maker, blender, toaster, cookware, plates, cups and silverware. It also had a starter pack of essentials like paper towels, dish detergent, washing machine detergent and coffee.
Our unit had 2 bathrooms. One was off of the king room and had a separate toilet area, double vanity, large whirlpool tub, and shower. The second bathroom could be accessed via the double bedroom or the living area. It had a double vanity and separate toilet and tub area.
Both bedrooms had a small, usable closet and a dresser. A large closet was also located off of the living area. And the foyer area had plenty of floor space for shoes, coolers, or excess items.
One of the best assets of the room was its large size. There was plenty of room for our party of six. And the patio created a little extra space and a chance for some fresh air.
The washer and dryer was also an asset, even for our somewhat short stay. It was great to be able to do a few loads of laundry after exploring the museums, theme parks and pools.
The Amenities at Club Wyndham Governor’s Green
This property feels like a true resort; there are so many things to do here. Miniature golf was one of my kids’ favorite activities. The billiards room ranked high on the list as well.
We also tried out the volleyball court, basketball net, small workout room, and playground. With so much to do, it ensured everyone could stay active. A firepit and cornhole boards provide even more outdoor activities for guests.
Two outdoor pools are located on the premises. One is the heated Family Pool, which has a kids’ splash pool and a hot tub. The other, the Tranquil Pool, is open seasonally and also has a hot tub nearby. The heated indoor pool and hot tub, called the Fox Run, is open year-round.
For more indoor entertainment, the Carriage House Activity Center, located near check-in, houses the Equestrian Club Activity Center, which has board games, a drawing table for little kids, a TV, and balls, rackets and clubs to be used for the outdoor activities.
Outdoor eating can be enjoyed on the picnic tables and gazebo near the units. Grills are available for cooking.
Weekly planned activities are available as well. The week we were there, yoga, water aerobics, and a muffin and mimosa gathering were offered in the mornings. One activity was offered every afternoon or evening except on Sunday. Afternoon activities included a popcorn and cotton candy party, trivia, and a tie-dye party. A paint-and-sip party as well as a welcome wine and cheese social were the evening offerings during our stay.
The Staff
Service is always a huge part of any hotel stay and Club Wyndham Governor’s Green didn’t disappoint in that category.
We encountered friendly staff from the moment we passed through the security gate. (Yes, I’m talking about you, Paula!) Check-in was smooth and friendly as well.
After checking in, a concierge explained the many activities and highlights of the resort, as well as what’s in the area. We loved that touch.
If you would like more information about becoming a Wyndham Club member, you’re offered an opportunity to sit in on an informational seminar — but there was no pressure to listen to the sales pitch and we skipped it.
Tips for Visiting Club Wyndham Governor’s Green
- Wifi is free at the resort. The network allows for 4 devices to be signed in per unit. However, the staff is happy to give you access to an additional network. We had a bit of trouble getting a usable signal, although with such a large complex, that likely varies depending on where your unit is located. If connecting to wifi is essential during your trip, you may want to request a unit with good connectivity or bring another way to connect. Cell phone service was very good at the resort.
- Parking is free.
- Pool towels are located in your room. No need to schlep any from home. But don’t forget to bring them to the pool with you because there are none at the pool.
- There is no restaurant on property. Two of the closest stores to stock up on groceries are Walmart and Food Lion. Walmart is on Rochambeau Road, about 10 minutes away. Food Lion is on Richmond Road and is about 5 minutes away. Both offer pick-up or delivery options.
- This large property has soft updates every few years and larger updates as needed. Be sure to ask for a unit that has had the most recent update. While your request can’t always be honored, it never hurts to ask. If you’re a Wyndham timeshare owner, you typically have priority for such a request, although staff will do all they can to honor every guest’s request.
- Want to be close to the main pool? The quiet pool? Or maybe the playground? These requests can be made with guest services as well. Again, the likelihood of the request being met depends on availability, but we found the staff to be really accommodating wherever possible.
- Housekeeping is not standard, but may be requested during your stay.
- Check-in for this hotel is 4 p.m. and check-out is 10 a.m.
- The resort uses wristbands for keyless entry to the room and any gated areas. Fun fact – frequent Wyndham guests often collect the bracelets as souvenirs from past vacations.
