If you’re spending Independence Day in Southern California, you’ve got loads of options for fun. From big city blowouts to small town charm, here are some of the most festive places in Southern California to celebrate the 4th of July.
🇺🇸 Ronald Reagan Library – Simi Valley

If you love a mix of history and hands-on fun, this one’s for you.
- Events start at 10 a.m. on July 4
- Presidential look-alikes, Presidential Bingo, and crafts for the kids
- Live music from the LA Sheriff’s Band
- Iwo Jima reenactors and other tributes as part of America’s 250th
- FREE!
Kim’s take: This is one of the most thoughtful and educational 4th of July events I’ve come across. It blends celebration and reflection—perfect if you’re looking for a meaningful way to spend the holiday with family.
🎆 Marina del Rey – Burton Chace Park Fireworks
Waterfront fireworks with a side of wine and serenity.
- Fireworks start at 9 p.m., synced to music
- Best spots: Burton Chace Park & Fisherman’s Village
- Fun add-on: $1 Summer WaterBus runs 11 a.m.–11 p.m.
Kim’s tip: I packed a picnic and a bottle of wine and found a cozy spot early at Burton Chace Park. The vibe was so chill and local—it felt like a neighborhood block party on the water.
🏝 Catalina Island

Island vibes meet patriotic flair.
- Golf cart parade with decked-out local floats
- Decked-out dinghy boats parade through Avalon Bay
- Live music, face painting, and USC marching band
- Fireworks over Avalon Bay at 9 p.m.
Kim’s note: If you’ve never taken the ferry to Catalina, July 4th is the perfect excuse. The parades are quirky in the best way, and watching fireworks from the beach—or a rooftop bar—is just dreamy.
✨ La Jolla Drone Light Show

Sustainability meets spectacle. Drones synchronized to music are taking over the fireworks shows.
- 500 drones light up the sky with images and words (double from last year)
- Choreographed to patriotic music
- Starts at 9 p.m.; head to the south end of Kellogg Park for prime viewing
Kim’s thought: I love that this show offers a low-noise, pet-friendly alternative to fireworks—and it’s so creative.
🍇 Temecula
Wine country puts on a party—yes, with fireworks too.
- Parade through Old Town at 10 a.m. with marching bands, floats and lots of red, white and blue
- Family fun and live music at Ronald Reagan Sports Park
- Fireworks at 9 p.m.
Kim’s memory: I just spent a weekend here with my mom and fell in love with the scenic vineyards and super cute downtown. Pair the festivities with a winery visit and make a weekend out of it.
🌊 Newport Dunes – Newport Beach

OC’s biggest fireworks show.
- 4-day celebration: July 3–6
- DJs, tribute bands, inflatable water park (reservations required)
- Fireworks at 9 p.m. on July 4
- Free entry; parking costs $50–$100
Kim’s tip: Come early, bring your beach gear, and settle in for the day. This is full-on summer fun—loud, proud, and totally SoCal.
🎶 Santa Maria – Red, White & Zoom
All-American fun with a retro twist.
- Free family fest with bounce houses and crafts
- Live 80s tribute band: The Molly Ringwald Project
- Drone show at 9 p.m. at Elks Baseball Field
🌴 Santa Barbara Waterfront
Fireworks with a side of beachy elegance.
- Free concerts, dancing, and family activities all day
- Fireworks over West Beach at 9 p.m.
- July 5 beach clean-up sponsored by Channelkeeper
Kim’s rec: If you want fireworks without the chaos, Santa Barbara’s your spot. It feels festive without being overwhelming—and the post-party beach cleanup is a nice community touch.
🚲 Huntington Beach

Bike parade + beach fireworks = classic California.
- Decorate your bike and join the Bicycle Cruise, led by veterans
- Fireworks at 9 p.m., viewable from beach or downtown
- Tickets required to view from the pier
Kim’s vibe: It’s hard to beat biking along the coast, feeling the sea breeze, then ending the day with fireworks over the water.
⛺️ Mission Bay – Campland on the Bay
Multi-day fun for campers and day-trippers.
- July 2–6: Concerts, crafts, mini golf, nightly DJ parties
- Fireworks July 4 at 9:30 p.m.
- SeaWorld’s Fireworks Spectacular also visible from here
Kim’s heads-up: Campsites sell out early, but you can still join the party as a day guest. It’s a family-friendly way to soak up the holiday in San Diego’s most relaxed bayfront setting.
