Spring break in Southern California doesn’t have to mean long lines or last-minute flights. Within a few hours of Los Angeles, you can walk beside elephants in a brand-new African savanna, pick flowers across 50 acres of blooms, volunteer for a cocktail in Big Bear, or build a “Themecation” around cowboy boots or movies.

1. Walk Beside Elephants at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park spans 1,800 acres and is home to more than 3,100 animals representing 340+ species. And it’s expanding. Denny Sanford Elephant Valley is the largest project in the park’s history and it opens on March 5, 2026.

This immersive expansion places guests inside a sweeping African savanna surrounded by elephants on multiple sides. More than 300 African plants including rare and endangered species shape the landscape. A highlight is Mkutano House , a two-story safari-style restaurant overlooking massive watering holes where you can watch elephants interact and learn about their social structure and the Park’s conservation efforts.

2. The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch

Each spring, the Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch draw thousands of visitors for the iconic ranunculus bloom. Open March 1 through May 10 , the Ranch also offers wellness events like yoga and sound baths, sunset wine tastings, craft workshops, live music and family-friendly activities.

On March 21, 2026, Care for Big Bear hosts Climate & Cocktails, a short social volunteer event designed for college-age travelers and young adults who want to do something meaningful without giving up their whole day. Volunteers spend just two hours helping clean up trails, shoreline areas, parks, and neighborhoods. It’s a great way to plug in locally and the commitment is simple:

1:00–3:00 p.m. → Help clean trails, shoreline areas, parks, and neighborhoods.
3:30–5:00 p.m. → Enjoy one complimentary cocktail or mocktail at a participating restaurant.

  • Waiver required
  • Minors must be accompanied by an adult
  • Valid ID required for alcoholic beverages

March Is Mermaid Month at Ventura Harbor Village. The Villagebecomes a waterfront celebration of themed food, shopping, and interactive fun for the 11th year. Costumes are encouraged: mermaids, mermen, pirates, and sea creatures welcome.

All month, families can enjoy:
