Every Caribbean island has stunning landscapes and glorious beaches, but St. Lucia’s mountainous landscape sets a different tone. Full of natural beauty, this island is a must-visit for the vacationer who wants thrill, adventure, and relaxation in one destination. On the island, visitors will find many classic Caribbean excursions to try, such as Catamaran Cruises or snorkeling.
However, St. Lucia shines bright as a destination for adventurers who want to explore something unique. From interactive cooking classes to sightseeing ferry rides, St. Lucia is a destination for travelers seeking a unique experience. I found the people of this island to be both friendly and welcoming, setting the tone for an unforgettable visit.
If you’re lucky enough to visit this exceptional island, I recommend trying these best things to do in St. Lucia.

Fun to See Island Ferry

Before visiting St. Lucia, every traveler should mentally prepare for long, windy drives throughout the mountains. Most international flights arrive at Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) on the island’s southern end. While some resorts are situated on this area of the island, many of the most popular resorts are not. If you’re staying in the central or northern part of the island, you could be looking at an hour to two hours of driving on unpaved roads. For those prone to motion sickness, this can be slightly worrisome.
Luckily, there’s a great alternative form of transportation that also serves as a great excursion to start your vacation. The Fun To See Island Ferry Service offers an alternative way to head to your resort via ferry. A car arrives at the airport to take you to the dock, where you’ll board a double-decker ferry. The ferry makes several stops at resorts during the journey, with guides pointing out St. Lucia’s stunning landscape and sights.
You’ll also get snacks and drinks (rum punch, of course) to enjoy throughout your ride. If you love the ferry service, you can take it back to the airport on your way home. I love that the Fun To See Island Ferry Service is both a unique experience and a practical form of transportation. As someone who gets both car and seasick, I found the steadiness of the ferry far more comfortable than traveling on St. Lucia’s bumpy, windy roads.
Taste of St. Lucia Cooking Class

Regardless of your cooking skill level, the Taste of St. Lucia Cooking Class creates a memorable experience and a great way to learn more about the island’s cuisine. This cooking class takes place in a building within a stunning garden of tropical fruits and flowering plants. You’ll have plenty of time to wander the garden area before, during, and after your cooking class experience.
The class is guided by a local who will enlighten you with tips and tricks throughout the process. Your group will make an appetizer, main course, and dessert. You won’t have to spend long on the island to grasp how much St. Lucians love their rum punch and banana bread! During my visit, the cooking class menu included:
- St. Lucian Accra with Spicy Mayo Dip
- Grilled Chicken Breast with Tropical Salsa, Mashed Provisions, and Sauteed Kale and Pumpkin
- Baked Cinnamon Banana
Since this class is done as a small group, it offers a no-pressure atmosphere that anyone can enjoy. After the class, you’ll get a completion certification to take home as a keepsake. This unique experience is one of the best things to do in St. Lucia for travelers who want to do something different than traditional island activities.
Explore Local Cuisine

Like many other Caribbean islands, St. Lucia has dozens of all-inclusive resorts. While many resorts have exceptional cuisine on-site, there’s nothing like exploring the local dining options when visiting a new place. Not only are the flavors delicious, but they help to connect you with the culture.
Foodies who want to explore St. Lucia’s regional cuisine can take a taxi to any local restaurant or bar. Whether you sip on a Piton Beer, the national beer of St. Lucia, or grab a Roti at a local restaurant, St. Lucia’s cuisine is worth the trek off of your resort.
The mountainous terrain of St. Lucia makes it challenging to walk places, so I recommend planning out where you’d like to dine in advance of your travel. Many food excursions also provide a taste of local cuisine, such as the Taste of St. Lucia Food Tour. If you plan on exploring local cuisine for multiple days of your visit, it may be worthwhile to stay at a resort that is not all-inclusive.
Finding the Best Things to Do in St. Lucia for You
I believe there’s something for every kind of traveler to explore in St. Lucia. Adventure can be found while hiking Mt. Pimard or the challenging Piton Mountains. Alternatively, relaxation can be found on the miles and miles of white sand beaches.
But to me, the true treasures of St. Lucia (and what sets it apart from other neighboring islands) are the unique things to do on the island. The list of things to do in St. Lucia will never run dry – even if you’re there for a longer-than-average stay. I could return to this island for another week and find dozens of other things to do.
