I’ve spent the last decade hunting down the best weekend trips in the Pacific Northwest, so I like to think my radar for a great couples getaway is pretty sharp. If you and your partner need to disappear for a weekend, this one’s for you. I’m breaking down our recent escape to Winthrop, Washington, where we hid out at Sun Mountain Lodge. From the insane mountain views to the quiet trails right outside our door, here is exactly how we made the most of a weekend away without burning ourselves out.

Highlights

  • Luxury meets the Wild West: We planned to explore non-stop, but the lodge was so restful we barely wanted to leave.
  • Kitschy western charm: Winthrop leans hard into its 1800s storefronts and wooden boardwalks. It totally works; we felt like we were in an authentic western town.
  • The perfect North Cascades basecamp: Epic day hikes to scenic drives.
  • An Itinerary that lets you actually relax: We enjoyed an itinerary that balanced outdoor adventure with genuine downtime.

Since 1968, guests have enjoyed staying at the Sun Mountain Lodge for unforgettable escapes. We loved how the resort’s rich heritage, warm hospitality and breathtaking North Cascades views made our stay so special.

Accommodations at the Sun Mountain Lodge

  • Mt. Gardner Views: We spent a lot of time on our private balcony, taking in the views and watching the sunset over the North Cascades.
  • Stone Fireplace: Even in the summer, it can get chilly in the evening. We used the fireplace each night.
  • Western Themed: Northwest artwork accents the rustic-chic decor. While the space showed a bit of age, it charmed us with its character and spotless cleanliness.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Currently, second-floor layouts feature king beds, while ground-floor options offer queens.

  • Cuisine: We enjoyed seasonal meals with produce from local farmers.
  • Casual with an upscale vibe: We loved that you could come in from hiking and fit right in while still enjoying fine dining.
  • Wine Cellar: One of the largest in the Pacific Northwest, with over 3500 bottles of wine. I tried the Sun Mountain Lodge red blend, produced by Maryhill, a renowned Washington winery, for the resort.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Call at least a week in advance to book a wine cellar dinner. The wine cellar seats up to 14 guests.

  • Brand New Sun Mountain Spa: For the ultimate in romance, enjoy a couples massage.
  • Summer and Winter Activities: The on-site adventure center can help you book a variety of outdoor activities year-round, both at the resort and in the area.
  • Year-Round Hot Tubs: I love a soak after a hike, and nothing beats soaking in a steamy hot tub as snowfall begins if you visit in the winter.

Winthrop, Washington: A Fun, Faux Western Town

  • Western-themed town: In 1972, as Highway 20 neared completion, the town came together and embraced a western theme, even enshrining it in city codes for future development. We loved it, strolling down wooden boardwalks, taking in the western storefronts and artwork. Local events include cattle drives, pack trains and the annual 49er Days Celebration
  • Downtown: Visit a variety of historic buildings filled with shops and restaurants. We enjoyed eating ice cream on the patio at Sheri’s Sweet Shoppe.
  • Spring Creek Bridge: One of Winthrop’s most photographed landmarks. My husband and I like to park by the Winthrop Rink and then cross the bridge to walk into town.

The Perfect North Cascades Basecamp

The Methow River flows between wooded, rocky banks, with Mt. Gardner and the North Cascade Mountains visible in the distance.

  • North Cascade National Park: Just a beautiful 90-minute drive from the Sun Mountain Lodge to the gorgeous overlook at Diablo Lake, an iconic landmark in the park.
  • Twisp: The cutest town you’ve never heard of. We love exploring all the shops and galleries in this darling artist community.
  • Methow Trails: This nonprofit was founded in 1977 and established a world-class trail system that connects the communities and nature throughout the Methow Valley. I downloaded the Methow Trails App, which has maps, weather and trail conditions
