A Unique Mother-Daughter Experience
Some moms take their daughters shopping. I took mine to The Obscure Distillery in Downtown Los Angeles.
And this was not just any distillery tour. I’m from Kentucky, so I’ve done plenty of bourbon distillery tours over the years. But this is different. The Obscure Distillery in the Los Angeles Arts District is an outing that is more memorable than dinner, more original than shopping and way more fun than just grabbing a drink.
My daughter and I laughed our way through the whole experience. We tasted spirits, created our own cocktails, met the owner and wrapped up the night with beignets.

The Obscure Distillery tour is like stepping into a story.
Our “spirit guide” moved us through multiple rooms, each with a different purpose and mood, so the night kept unfolding instead of feeling like one long tasting bar.
We sampled three house-distilled spirits, Four Thieves Gin, Three Fates Génépi Liqueur, and Seven Spheres Rye, served neat, and three original handcrafted cocktails while our “spirit guides” shared the legends, history and craft behind each pour.
There are live artists, award-winning bartenders and a candlelit setting with waterfalls and mystical ruins that make the whole thing feel theatrical in the best way.
SheBuysTravel Tip: Mocktails are available too, so it works even if not everyone in your group is drinking.

Why I Recommend It
- Great for families with adult kids: It gives you something to experience together, not just consume side by side.
- The storytelling makes it special: This isn’t just about drinking. It’s about the story wrapped around it.
- The multiple rooms keep it interesting: Each space adds something different, which makes the experience feel immersive.
- It works for different kinds of groups: Mother-daughter outings, girls’ nights, date nights and visitors looking for an only-in-LA experience.
- Inclusive Mocktail Program: The “full vibe” remains intact with sophisticated mocktail versions of the signature drinks. Pro-Tip: Ask to sample the botanical tea; it is brewed from the same botanicals used in the distillery’s Seven Spheres Rye gin. I took some home.
- The pours are generous: Plan for rideshare or a designated driver.
