From sunrise whale sightings to candlelit gourmet dinners, Hacienda del Mar Autograph Collection delivers a serene, food-forward all-inclusive escape in Cabo that feels quietly luxurious.

  • Front-row whale watching: Cozy hacienda-style villas and oceanfront pools put you steps from the beach during peak humpback and gray whale season.
  • Unexpectedly excellent cuisine: With a dozen dining venues, standout Mexican flavors and splurge-worthy chef’s table experiences, the food far exceeds typical all-inclusive expectations.
  • Relaxed wellness-first vibe: Think sunrise beach strolls, thoughtfully programmed fitness classes and an intimate spa.

Sitting on the Hacienda del Mar beach watching whales breach near the shore, I felt rich to be seeing it with my own eyes. January in Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico, is a magical time, when humpback and gray whales swim in the Sea of Cortez. It was incredible to witness mama and baby whales splash and spray at sunrise by my uncrowded resort beach.

If your dream Los Cabos vacation is a quiet and relaxing one, Hacienda del Mar Autograph Collection might just be the perfect choice. It’s a rare all-inclusive where guests are more book-readers and whale-watchers than party-goers, and the cuisine is exquisite. Here’s what I loved about this luxury hacienda-style resort.

Standout Features of Hacienda del Mar

You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to luxury hotels in Cabo San Lucas, so what makes Hacienda del Mar, an Autograph Collection all-inclusive resort by Marriott special? For starters, its cozy Mexican Colonial villas, restaurants and pools border the beach, so you can have a front-row seat to whale watching from January to March.

I’ve stayed at several Los Cabos properties with ocean views that have inconvenient or limited beach access, but that’s not the case at Hacienda del Mar. When not lounging at one of the resort’s oceanfront pools, you can easily pop down a few steps to get your toes in the sand. It’s generally not safe to swim in the sea here, but it’s still a pleasure to walk on the beach.

SheBuysTravel Tip: If you go to the beach during the day, local vendors will try to sell you jewelry, hats and shirts. I was approached six times in half an hour. Sunrise and sunset are the best vendor-free times to visit.

The other standout feature of Hacienda del Mar is its delectable food. Master Chef Lazcarro knocks his signature dishes out of the park. Everything I ate, from taco lunches to steak dinners, far exceeded my expectations of an all-inclusive resort.

Elevated Dining and Drinking Experiences

Hacienda del Mar Autograph Collection offers a dozen culinary experiences and room service to keep you full and happy around the clock. Here are a few of my recommendations:

  • El Molino: Head to this coffee shop as early as 6 a.m. for lattes, fresh fruit, yogurt and pastries. Take your early-morning treats to the beach for a sunrise picnic.
  • Tuna Juice Bar: Grab a fresh juice or smoothie on your way back up to the room. I enjoyed the Emergen-C-trus with orange, grapefruit and lemon juice. They also offer chia pudding, overnight oats and sandwiches (which are great for off-site adventures).
  • Tomates: This expansive breakfast buffet is open from 7 to 11 a.m. And yes, if you’re counting, this would be your third breakfast. Tomates has an incredible spread of tropical fruit, yogurt, smoothies, fresh-made tortillas, quesadillas, pastries and grilled vegetables. At dinnertime, return for an Italian buffet.
  • Tahona: This was my favorite little lunch spot, with a welcome dish of chips and bean dip. A chicken fajita taco on corn makes a nice light bite.
  • Sirenas: If you’re ready for lunch before Tahona, the taqueria, opens at 1, head to this beachfront cafe for chips and guac or a tropical fruit dish to tide you over.
  • Pitahayas: One of only two places you need a reservation for dinner, this seaside dining experience is dreamy at dusk. I enjoyed the chicken with poblano mole.

Splurgeworthy Dining

Every restaurant has a nice selection of all-inclusive options, but you might want to budget for the premium offerings on the menu.

  • De Cortez grill house offers an upcharge a la carte breakfast for $10 per person, and a steakhouse dinner menu for $35. For dinner, I recommend ordering the filet mignon that melts in your mouth. There’s also a surcharge menu offering Wagyu Tomahawk. You’ll need a reservation for dinner here.
  • Pitahayas, a gourmet Mexican kitchen, has a surcharge menu featuring lobster and oysters. For an intimate candlelight dinner, you can also request private dining in the wine cellar, Cava de Santiago. This will run you about $100 per person, but it’s a lovely chef’s table experience with six courses with alcohol pairings. I enjoyed the lobster in habanero chili cream sauce and charcoal bread, paired with Bruxo mezcal from Oaxaca.

What Does the All-inclusive Package Cover?

Your all-inclusive package starts with lunch on your first day and ends with breakfast the day of your departure.

Here’s what the all-inclusive package at Hacienda del Mar covers, with a few exclusions:

  • Accommodations
  • Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks
  • 24-hour room service with free delivery for the first order each day; after that (and also for orders between the hours of 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.) there’s a $10 delivery fee
  • El Molino Coffee Shop, excluding soft drinks and bottled water
  • Mini fridge stocked daily — mine had Pepsi, Pepsi Light, Perrier, bottled water, tonic water and beer
  • Free wifi throughout the resort; this does not extend to the beach
  • Kid’s club
  • Activities, from Zumba to pool boxing

Wellness Options, From Fitness Classes to Spa Treatments

Stretch by the sea, do spin class in the pool or enjoy a 50-minute massage at the spa. No matter your speed, there are wellness activities to fill your day.

  • Cactus Spa: I highly recommend booking a spa treatment at this little spa. Arrive an hour early to unwind in its steam room, sauna and Nordic circuit. The outdoor jacuzzi isn’t super hot, but that just means you can soak in it longer.
  • Fitness center: Some hotel gyms are dingy, but this one feels spacious. Start your day with an array of new-looking TechnoGym equipment.
  • Fitness activities: Andre, the gym coach, plans three group workouts a day, from spin class to beach bootcamp. Head to the gym for the weekly fitness schedule and make a reservation to secure your spot one day in advance.

Is Hacienda del Mar, Autograph Collection Right for You?

Hacienda del Mar is a great choice if you’re looking for a low-key, all-inclusive resort in Cabo San Lucas with excellent food, and don’t mind sharing the property with kids.

  • Families: There’s a kids’ activity pool, kid’s club and restaurants have kids’ menus, but there aren’t a ton of children running around the property during school months. This resort could be a good fit if you want beach access for your family and don’t mind keeping kids out of the ocean because the current is too strong for swimming.
  • Adults: The resort is actively working on creating more adults-only experiences, but right now, families are sometimes allowed in the adults-only pool and restaurant. Reach out to the resort before you book if adults-only options are important to you, to check the status of their amenities.
