If you’re headed to Mexico City and want to stay somewhere that feels equal parts luxury boutique and cosmopolitan cool, Hilton’s Hotel Umbral is it. The hotel is just steps from the Zócalo in Centro Histórico, the largest plaza in Latin America. I was impressed by how every detail felt intentional and reflective of the owners who are serious art collectors and design enthusiasts.
What Makes It Special:
- A Former Office Building, Reimagined: The bones of the building are old, but the vibe is all modern Mexico. The owners converted this downtown office building into a boutique-style hotel that is intimate yet spacious. The architecture leans into contrast—with a “light to dark” design concept that plays out across floors and suites.
- Art is Everywhere: You won’t find generic hotel prints here. Every room and hallway features original work by local artists. The entire hotel is designed like a gallery—and lucky for us, we got to attend “Death by Landscape,” a gallery event on site. Artists mingled with guests, talked about their work, and created an experience that felt personal and local.
The hotel owners also attended the art gallery event and that gave me an opportunity to learn more about them – their motivation for the Umbral (and others), and how

- Stylish Modern Suites: My suite sat at the end of a dramatic hallway, opening into two rooms—ideal for girlfriends traveling together or a mother-daughter duo.
- The entry: moody and dimly lit, serene design – almost like a private lounge.
- The bedroom: airy, bright, and modern, with plush bedding and blackout curtains. The light-to-dark theme really shines here—pun intended.
- Balconies and suites with private hanging garden available
- Rainfall shower, local bath products, strong Wi-Fi, and comfortable workspace
Thoughtful Extras

- Tequila Happy Hour: Complimentary, near reception, with light snacks and regional pours—a perfect way to kick off the evening.
- Business Center: Not your average hotel setup. There are works spaces and it’s also stocked with a record player and a crate of vintage vinyl from legendary Latina artists.
- Cubo Concept Store: Is a unique and local gift shop in the lobby, filled with artisan-made goods and souvenirs from clothing to art, of course.

- Multiple Art Galleries and Events: Just past reception is a small, vivid gallery showcasing colorful, fantastical creatures of Mexican folk art. Above the gift shop is the main gallery featuring local artists and events. Follow @nardo_cocktailclub and @hotelumbral for dates.
Dining at the Umbral
- Terraza Umbral (Rooftop Bar & Pool)
Rooftop views of the city and the infinity pool, homemade tortillas and fresh grilled options. The rooftop is open to non-guests after 5 p.m., so it can be lively on weekends. - Lumbre (Formal Dining) Known for their homemade butter rolled in ash. It tasted rich, creamy—almost like a soft cheese. The ash? Barely noticeable, but a conversation starter.
- Paxia: Star Chef Daniel Ovadia serves modern Mexican menu in a gorgeous rooftop setting.
- Ojo de Agua Café: Across from the gift shop, this casual café offers strong coffee, fresh juices, housemade horchata and easy grab-and-go breakfasts.
- Oliva: A more casual approach to local fare, served with Mexican flare and huge portions. We ate breakfast here and could not even begin to finish our meals.
Nearby Attractions (within a 15 minute walk)
- Across the street is Panabex Museum, a private collection that’s free to visit and well worth an hour of your time. It is free and hotel guests are offered an early entrance 30 minutes before it opens to the public.
- The Postal Museum, the MC Metropolitan Cathedral
- BalcondelZocalo is a – gorgeous views, delicious fresh food. In house grown herbs.

- Next door is the only Tim Horton’s I have seen with a mural by a local artist on the wall and a cocktail lounge upstairs.
As a female staying here alone, I felt safe, welcomed, and creatively recharged. I rarely walk around any city alone at night and Mexico City is no exception. I didn’t feel unsafe but I am careful. I would definitely stay here again. And bring friends.
